Leaking? You use sealant, right?
I find without sealant they deflate in less than an hour. After the first sealing, but unridden, they still leak flat in less than ten hours or so. It's only after a good ride do they really seal nicely.
Too much tape? Not really - you need more when the tyre isn't tight on the tape when it's in the centre channel.
