  • Before I contact Garmin Support, can anyone with a Forerunner 10 tell me if I am being a moron or not:
The straps came off my unit (I was fiddling with it after a run while talking to someone). I have tried reattaching the straps to no avail. The pins seem too short for the strap, meaning once I put them back on, they fall off within a matter of seconds.

So, has anybody replaced/fixed their FR10 strap successfully?

  • They look just like regular watch pins so it should if you take a thumb tack and push the pin in on one side then you can slide it out all the way and check it isn't bent/bend it back, with a rubber strap a bent pin can add enough give to make it pop off.

Another place to check is around the pin holes in the strap they could have hairline tears that only show when you pull them apart.

Easiest way of getting the straps back on without bending the pin is to push it in on one side so it's flush then put the other side over the exposed pin and move the strap so it's seated correctly then push the side that is sticking out in with any flat object and do the final bit with the thumb tack to make sure both sides are level.

Hopefully not needed but spare strap parts.

  • Thanks for the tips. They're Garmin-specific pins, meaning I can't use any from my set of replacement watch spring-pins. There doesn't seem to be any wear or damage to the holes in the rubber strap that the pins sit on, the pins just seem a 0.5mm too short...

I've fired an email off to Garmin Support as I have read on a few sites people saying that Garmin changed the strap design and have been sending them out to people with problems. I bought mine 2nd hand so No idea what version I have and if me not being the original owner affects me support-wise...

  • 2 out of 3 of my garmin products are now back at garmin being repaired/replaced. Their customer service people are very nice (just as well, really).

  • My garmin 510 is starting to get really iffy about uploading via my phone, last 5 or so times and 3 needed to be redone to get it to upload. Sign of a bigger problem?

  • So this NOH business is similar to the Apple thing I take it? Returns that have been given the once over and they carry a full warranty.

Tempted to buy one of these and get the HRM/cadence accessories with some vouchers I got for my birthday.

So I got the NOH Garmin over the weekend. To be honest, you could not tell it was NOH. Clean, came with all the accessories and it worked from the off. Plugged in my MicroSD card, uploaded maps and took it out on Sunday. No problems.

I seem to have a bag with 2 complete bar mounts with about a dozen different sized elastics. The stock mounts are not as flimsy as their reputation and held up just fine. It does take up a lot of space on the bars and it was only a short pootle so that opinion may change. I ordered another mount anyway just in case.

And cheers to freezing77 for the link to the map import info. Hugely appreciated.

Urgh, I need to show proof of purchase. It was bought 2nd hand through eBay and the previous owner said it was a gift.

If an FR10 owner with their invoice would like to do me a massive favour, it would be greatly appreciated.

It's the older Edge 705 etc. mounts with the tab which were flimsy. The quarter turn mounts are pretty reliable.

  • Ah. Cheers for the clarification.

  • Thanks for the info! How are you finding the battery?

  • I bought the GARMIN 510 as an alternative to using my phone to record rides to Strava only because my phone battery runs out on longer rides - but I wish I hadn't.
After days trying to resolve issues with the 510 and tiresome hours spent on the phone to Garmin I sent the unit back.

Like some others, I found the unit riddled with bugs, the user interface poor and the manuals and online support lacking.

Specifically the unit wouldn't pair with my Android phone, the altimeter recorded wildly incorrect levels that re-calibration couldn't resolve and the battery warning came on after full charge.

Those functions that did operate normally do so in irritating fashion. For example, setting the working units to imperial (or statute as Garmin confusingly call it) meant my speed was recorded in miles per hour, but the distance travelled in feet! Who wants to know how many feet they rode? As for some of the more complex functions, I didn’t even bother.

I’d still like a GPS that will upload wirelessly to an android phone, but which one?

  • I'm still convinced that everything above Garmin500 is a scam and counterproductive in real use.

  • Nope, 800s are pretty damn good even with their annoyances.

  • What's a good price for a used 800 with full European maps and a handle bar mount? Slight cosmetic damage but functionally fine. I was thinking of selling mine and don't want to try and rip anyone off.

  • They're about £200 new I think so less than that>?

  • Where the fuck did my post go?

  • Lost, like Garmin 510 users.

  • Does the 800 navigate me on loaded tcx course for 12 hours of riding without running dry?

  • I don't know, does it? I've ridden my Garmin 800 for 13 hours but I don't know if that was with navigation or not. I've used it with nav for over 12hrs.

    Have you tried different phones?

I have a Motorola G and it's totally unable to pair/sync with my Garmin, but an iPhone 4s works (albeit annoyingly slowly).

So far so good but the caveat is - I have barely had a chance to use the thing enough to wear it down. It arrived about 50% charged so I charged it to 100% before setting it up. Out for about an hour and a bit - umm used 6% battery I think? Early days for any useful feedback I'm afraid.

  • @ architect

Sounds like there was a bug with that unit.

I've been though 4, and they all worked fine. Mostly. Get another and give it a go.

  • @skinny

You've had 4? I nearly had a stroke with just the one, but perhaps you're right it was a bad egg and I was unlucky. Tell me, did yours do things like record distance in feet?

  • No never such crazy things!

Yes 4. Broke a couple, upgraded a couple.

  • I've borrowed someone else's Garmin and it pops up with alerts all the time, warning me that I'm entering a 30kph zone or a 40kph zone. My 800 doesn't do this. Does anyone know how to turn them off?
