  • Did a few laps of swains, but only problem now was that there was road works coming down Highgate west lane, so that did slow down progress and the flow of the laps...

  • Might give this a go.

  • I had a small setback today - my phone stopped recording and I missed a part of the ride and about 1200 ft.

Other than that, I'm still over 50% now so it's looking good. I'll just have to make up the lost ascent on Sunday.

  • Typical that this challenge coincides with the hottest period of the year so far. I sweat/dehydrate a lot and can never take enough fluid along. I suppose I could take a rucksack with a few bottles but that ain't gonna be great for climbing.

  • I hear there are these things called shops. All over the country. Far and wide.
Apparently they sell water, and other tasty drinks which one can buy when they are thirsty.

  • No shops on the route I go on :)

  • The last house on the right on the Bonette does water as well.

  • It was the same last year - right in the middle of the heatwave.

  • Pah, I'm doing it in Taipei. It only drops below 30 at night and its super humid. I've also had a typhoon to contend with for the last two days.

On the plus side, no more sheepishly asking for water in pubs as all the police stations in the mountains have chilled water coolers, and they seem genuinely happy to see cyclists using them. At one station an officer even apologised as the chiller was broken and they only had room temp water. Most excellent police.

1 litre bottles and an extra stuffed down the jersey should be enough for 4-5 hours

  • Need to go out tonight but had day from hell at work...maybe just add 500 or so metres to push me nearer 50%.

  • No shops on the route I go on :)

A big circular route or are there loops/reps?

If the latter then take extra bottles on the first bit and stash them at the start of the loop/rep, a quick stop to replenish as required.

  • 3 days of commuting, that's 105m climbing so far. Only 248 more commuting days to go!

    Go me.

    Great tip, thanks.

  • Tip #2: Do not drink the one with yellow water in it.

  • I bought a small cable lock that I put in a jersey pocket so I can grab drinks from pubs or service stations and not be as worried about some scrote nicking my bike.

  • No shops near the loop or repeats I've been doing :(

But after chatting with one of the old boys round there found out there's an outdoor tap that works next to a workshop mid climb :) hopefully get to 60% after work tonight and finish up on Sunday with an Audax route weaving up the Pennines and caldervale

  • There is only one shop on the loop that I've (mainly) been doing but as I drive to the start, I've been leaving water and food in the car and just stocking up for each loop.

  • That's it done!

8,883 metres so only just made it but with work commitments and yesterdays weather to deal with, I'm happy with that. It's not quite top ten, or even top ten percent but 5035 / 44,242 is good enough for me.

I'm looking forward to receiving my roundel so it can go on the shelf with the rest of them....

  • Well done anyone who did this while working too. I was on holiday near some decent hills, but can't imagine doing it alongside work in London.

Chapeau, i recall from memory they only made 5000 roundels last year so get your order in early....

  • Ha, I should be ok then at 4130/44,242. Should have done it all on a BMX ;-)

  • Made 10km (am cheating by being in the alps) and just looked at the tshirt. Jesus- not very nice and VERY pricey $60 with shipping.

  • Just about managed it. Hardest one I've done to date. Had to finish up with repeats of a 5m train bridge

  • The guy with the most climbing (67,332m) did the vast majority of it by doing reps of the same climb worth 200m.

His final day was 226km of 63 reps of the same hill. 13 hours moving time.

Notice his profile says "paracyclist". Blimey.
