Stolen bikes

  • Not sure where else to post this, but had a weird experienceriding back from track training last night. I was heading along Railton Road towardsBrixton, minding my own business. Then on an open bit of road with no traffic, another cyclist turned right across my path, fairly slowly, saying “Wheeeee!”. Itwas actually like he was trying to make me crash into him. I took evasiveaction, but was a bit shaken.

Then 30m or so down the road I came across another cyclist, who was just pottering about on what looked like a stolen bike (stealth black Quintana Roo,full Record, clicky clicky freewheel). I say it looked stolen because of how hewas riding it, the way he was dressed (cargo pants, long-sleeve jumper), andbecause it just wasn’t the sort of bike you’d be pottering around Brixton on of a Monday. He sort of hung around at the Atlantic Road lights, and then rolledoff in another direction.

So, a few questions: 1) Does anyone know this bike? 2)Has anyone heard of a group of bike thieves operating in this way in that area (Ifeel like I’d had a near miss, and that maybe the intention was for one guy tohit me and his mate(s) to nick my bike)? 3) Am I making too many assumptions about these guys?

This sounds very plausible. Thieves are known to work in gangs, happens a lot (or at least, used to) in De Beauvoir, Hoxton. Sounds like you called it right.

  • Just caught a snivelling, cowardly cunt trying to strip my bike in Marylebone.

Realised as I was charging over screaming obscenities that cycling shoes are not ideal for fighting in, but he backed off so fast, apologising and falling over that I can only assume being confronted by a clown haired, stick thin six footer was not how the afternoons summery bike nicking was supposed to go.

I'm trying to get the morons running security in this block to give up the footage to post and the police interest so far has been one enormous shrug, so not exactly a great result but I do still have a functioning bike which is a blessing at least.

The reason I'm bothering to post this is the thief was riding a very obviously stolen blue and white carbon Pinarello and was clearly a pro, all bolts had been loosened on the bits he wanted and he was in the process of moving my stem up to cut the cables. So, if anyone has lost a Pinarello, or knows someone who has, I may have your man on tape.

...and if anyone sees a mixed race, 5'8" man wearing a blue t-shirt, white baseball cap and trainers on a carbon Pinarello, please give him a nudge under a bus from me.

  • Work in the area and about to go out for dinner there so will keep my eyes peeled

  • ^^ Might be worth parking elsewhere for a while - they're now probably a bit peeved with you & know what your bikes looks like.

  • ^bikes are living upstairs for a while and spare d-lock is now handy for any future meetings. I really hope he's not stupid enough to have another go as I'm still kicking myself for letting him get away last time.

  • Hi all, I know this isn't a fixed gear or single speed bike but I'm just trying to put notice out in as many places as possible. My navy + white Brompton was stolen today (Friday, July 18) from a bike rack outside 2 Pancras Square, on King's Boulevard. The strangest thing was, my heavy duty Kryptonite U-lock seemed completely undisturbed. It was still locked to the rack when I found it, no damage at all. Anyone know how a thief would take a Brompton from that?!

My stolen bike listing on Bike Shepherd is here.

Pictures of my Brompton are attached as is one of the rack from which it was stolen today. Thank you. :-(

Brompton's can come apart at the folds and front wheel+forks+bars removed if they have the right tools and know how then slide it out of the lock. If you get a replacement then buy a bag and fold it up to bring inside with you, even when well locked up the things are theif magnets. Sorry for your loss.

I put my u-lock through the triangle bit in this picture (all in the blue frame of the Brompton), so I wouldn't think they could fold it out of the lock in any way? But if they had a tool to simply unlock it, that would do it I guess. :-(

I've only ever locked my Brompton up less than a handful of times in its 4.5 years with me - I know Bromptons are not really made to be locked up but carried around. I've brought it in every day everywhere (doctor, shopping, pub) but this week my new office block decided I couldn't bring it into the new building and so I had to look it up outside. And the worst thing possible came true. Thank you for your sympathy.

  • The other, distressing, possibility is that you inadvertently did not lock it through the frame? A few of us have come back to our bikes to find we have been similarly careless - but lucky.

I'm happy if someone sees the bike to immediately call the police, or ask the rider where they got it from, inform them that you believe it is 'your friend Samuel condon's bike'
Follow the rider and or take them down doing a house arrest untill to police arrive to hopefully find out where the rest of my things are etc.

My most greatest thanks for everyone's help on this.
I've never had anything of mine nicked so very sad days.

  • Hi everyone,

A bit gutted to have had my Carrera stolen on Friday between 19:00–11:15 outside of the Peoples Park Tavern, Victoria Park Road, London E9 7BT. It was secured with a kryptonite D-Lock and cable. No remains of the lock were there when I returned to get my bike.

The bike is a 1970s(? rough guess) Carrera in White -> Faded Red with Blue Type decals.

    Photo here: http://imgur.com/7Sxj6ly

It is essentially the same as when that photo was taken, however it now has red Look clip less peddles and black fizik bar tape. There was a wired bicycle computer attached also. The wheels are Rigida deep section rims, with pink and yellow decals. There is also a good sized scratch on the vertical tube on the left hand rear side.

Happy to offer a reward to anyone who can get this back for me, or contact the police on my behalf if you know where it is/get offered it etc.

    Thanks,
    Edd

Will keep an eye out for this. This is local to me.

  • Please keep an eye out for my stolen track bike! It is a Canyon V-Drome built up with Shimano Dura Ace chainset and 50mm Planet X carbon wheels. It was taken from the boot of my car on Thursday night in Aldgate East. There are only a few in London and to my knowledge none with this set up. Please keep your eyes peeled. THANK YOU! (picture is of my 5th Floor teamate Rudy Melo's bike but without Planet X carbon wheels)

  • So I spotted someone riding by hackney downs last night on a crummy Hybrid, with a more expensive hybrid with a rack perched on their shoulder. The thing is the hybrid on their shoulder had a D lock through the back wheel, which struck me as a bit dodgy. If you know someone who lost a hybrid in this area, I do have photos, but you can't see the rider's face or the brand of the bike on his shoulder.

  • My Colnago c40 got stolen around Holborn yesterday.
Please let me know if you spot it.

    Thanks.

    Ouch :(

    How was it locked?

  • D lock and cable.
I usaully lock it in front of my office so I can see it through the window, that was the first time I had to lock it at a different place.
I can't believe this guys could go through a d lock in the middle of the day with people passing around.

  • Cables do nothing. What type of D-lock?

I wouldn't be locking that on the street at all in London's famous London.

  • why does the latest 118 118 tv advert show the moustached ones cutting through a bike lock with a pair of bolt croppers
    seems an odd image
