• ordered something cool that arrived this morning?

    absolutely have to show someone?

    post it here!

    simple as.

lo pro frame thats getting cut up/adapted into a polo beaut, a 24 inch wheel that came with the frame, and a shitload of 3.7mm walled hdpe pipe :)

the colour of the frame is actually very different to the photo, its more like matt's harry quinn.

  • And you're cutting the frame up... You're doing it very very wrong

  • And you're cutting the frame up... You're doing it very very wrong

    eh?

  • Removing derailleurs and filing off braze-ons is one thing; this takes puppy killing to heady new heights. It raises interesting questions and I still don't know how I feel about it.

On the one hand, it's just one of many unused 80s bike frames. You can afford to cut it up to make a unique creation which may or may not improve your polo skills but it will be yours and it will feel great to have commissioned and used such a thing. Is it akin to Obree destroying a functional washing machine because it contained one small but ideal part to make something new and successful? People spout a lot of bollocks about converting bikes and there is little doubt that that frame was never going to be competitively time-trialed again so what 'better' could become of it than to be part of a bike played in polo tournaments?

On the other hand, you have had a brief flirtation with the curly seat tube because a handful of other polo players are using them. How do you assess that it will help your play when you are already very good at getting weight over the back end to manoeuvre your bike? Are there other tubing configurations to achieve the same effect without destroying a striking and well-built bike to make something altogether more amateurish? Is it a waste of raw materials and energy? Is this question redundant when most of us already own several bikes more than we actually need and endless other piles of manufactured stuff.

The main thing is you'll be using it rather than doing exactly the same thing, documenting the process and labelling it as an another tired art project which discusses 'throwaway consumerist culture'. It could be great. As long as you leave that one tube pink of course.

    BOOM!

Tristan's dream brought back down to earth

  • Wasn't meant to - I'm genuinely undecided and proposed arguments for each.

I only echoed many people's gut feeling that it's madness (and also implied their reasoning could be hypocritical) but I think something great could come from it. Who can say?

  • i liked it. would read again.

  • some truely wonderful points in there matt

i think it is definately worth destroying one frame (which as you said would probably never recieve the love it deserved), to create a frame which is loved and used a lot :)

my main reason for doing things this way was because i wanted the curvy seat tube. not because some other players use it (as i have seen many other designs that work just as well), but simply because it looks a lot nicer, and the benefits are obvious. i have no shame in saying aesthetics are really important to me.
i attempted to get said seat tube through ceeway, who informed me that columbus (the only current manufacterer of curved seat tube) will not be producing the tubing for least another 6 months due to broken machinery.
i then called over 10 framebuilders, none of whom had one.
    i THEN resorted to this.

having my weight that much more over the back wheel will make a huge difference!
minimal effort hoiking the front of the bike up for a start. much smaller turning circle. shorter wheelbase.

how will the frame be more amateurish? totally different kettle of fish, polo bike and time trial bike are at opposite ends of the biking 'spectrum'.

i want the gangsta back as the everyday bike as well, i miss it!

you'll all see, the frame/fork will be lovely AND functional.

plus doing things this way is a lot cheaper than buying a joust/butterbean/14bikeco frame.......

  • is there really a need for a Newcastle version of this?

  • does it make a difference to you?

    shush

  • I love the first two posts of this thread:

"Does anyone have any new toys they want to show off?"

    "Ok, me first..."

Lol. I want a Hackney-only 'Post Your Pets' thread.

My new Ortlieb I finally got around to opening it after leaving it sitting in it's box for 3 days. Pretty impressed with it.

  • Count 'em

  • Count the teeth on this bad boy that arrived in my post today then. Absolutely none at all...

However, after just 12 hours, he has picked up some gangsta hand signs. This one clearly means that he is a member of the notorious 'Boober Crip'

  • thats a shit load, goin on ya polo bike?

Prolly not, Ste. Got no use for it really, just had to have it cos it's the biggest freewheel I've ever seen :p

  • oh well thats as good an excuse as any to have it lol

  • Congrats mate!

  • This doesn't really qualify for a new 'look what I got for Christmas' thread, especially since it was a present to myself:

1/8th inch three-piece cranks and Profile 42t splinedrive chainring to finish off the Scrambler - yum

  • very nice john.
