In case it helps we started junior off with a balance bike from Decathlon, I think it was about £35. Pretty much as light as a Rothan (wealthier friends confirm) and provided you are essentially willing to PDI it yourself it works out, and has been pretty strong. Lacks the cool of a proper headset and so forth, and I am aware Rothans can be sold on for a decent price, but worth a look if you're struggling and lighter than many more expensive ones.
We now have a nice little Isla Cnoc which is fantastic as a first 'proper' bike, but I stand by the Decathlon one for a balance bike, great value.
OK he's only 15 months old, but it's gonna need HHSBing by the time he's ready to ride :-)
