Oh, and I forgot: As I rode out, unfortunately the Epping New Road and Epping Road were closed because of two crashes involving cyclists, the first on the stretch of the A104 between Ranger's Road and the Robion Hood Roundabout, and the second just southwest of Bell Common on the B1393 Epping Road, which the police said was the more serious incident (but that's often a bit Chinese whisper-y). Hope the riders were OK. I'll try to find some details in a minute.
I had to take two diversions, the first being onto Fairmead Road, which I think may have been the old 'main road' to Epping, connecting to the (lower) tea hut, and then via the B172 to Theydon Bois, up Piercing Hill and Theydon Road to get back on the DD route.
