Cycling to Canary Wharf - T de F Fan Park

  • I see there is a Fan Park open for watching the T de F.

Can anyone give me a quiet cycling route to Canary Wharf/Wood Wharf from Three Mills on the River Lee towpath or Limehouse Cut ? Also a cycle route from Liverpool Street Station would be appreciated.

Looking at the A to Z it seems full of main roads so I need some local knowledge.

    Much obliged.

  • try along the thames
footpath bit dodgy round blackfriars - tower bridge section but from there either the thames path itself or the road that run aparallel to the thames are quiet and pleasant places to ride ... well apart from the cobbles

alternatively regents canal / grand union / lea valley navigation / and hey presto you are a minute or two away from canary wharf with only a very small section of road to cross

  • If you can make your way to Tower Hill, maybe CS3 would be right for you? Just follow the blue line all the way to Canary Wharf.

  • Can anyone give me a quiet cycling route to Canary Wharf/Wood Wharf from Three Mills on the River Lee towpath or Limehouse Cut ?

If you follow the towpath along the Limehouse Cut to Ropemaker's Field, do a left onto Narrow Street, do a right onto Three Colt Street, follow it to the Thames then follow the Thames path east for a short bit you're at Westferry Circus (i.e. one end of the Wharf).

  • at the bottom of the ropemakers fields just cross the road and you are on a cycle path along the thames once again which comes out at west ferry circus with one set of stairs to walk up no need to hit the roads

  • That fan park, is that allright or a load of toss? Have a feeling it's marmite

  • a few live stages in the sun with tinnies
got to give it a go at least once

  • Thanks everyone. I know how to get to Narrow Street (The Narrow pub !) so Thames Path from there seems the answer.
    Most grateful.

The Fan Park should be ok. For the Olympic Road Races there was a similar thing at the top of Box Hill. Big screen, food vendors, memorabilia sellers, toilets (please !). Will be alright providing it doesn't rain. Could be a good place to chill out and look at other peoples bikes.

  • has anyone been down there yet ? with this sun and that outdoor screen it seems like a godsend ?

    is it any good ?

  • It isn't open until the 15th

  • Had a look round the area where it will all occur. Massive space, lots of potential to make a really great fan park.
    Excitement.

  • come on the 15th

  • It's the 15th. And a rest day. Guessing it may be a little quiet there tonight.

  • Just been there in my lunchtime. Massive screen, few food and drink trucks. Not much bike specific stuff yet, but there's a few tents that don't look like they've been setup yet. Nice bit of grass to sit on, could be nice if you know a few people .

There's also a beach volleyball court just outside it too...

  • so for those of us who actually work is there anything on offer ? by the time i finish the stage will have finished ... will they be repeating it in the evening or do i have to wait till saturday

  • A couple of my colleagues just went down - they were showing a documentary about The Texan made prior to The Fall, which was good for a few schadenfreude giggles if nothing else. A few of us will go down tomorrow and see what it's like in action.

There was beach volleyball being played, summat to do with Reebok gym, not sure if it's part of the Park or not.

  • ^^It's open to 10pm, so I guess they're showing more than just the stage and then shutting up shop.

  • Seems a bit redundant to wait until today - the second rest day. when there will only be 6 days to use it and only 2 of these at the weekend!

  • My desk overlooks wood wharf. They've had a load of other stuff on over there until recently - some foodie thing, and then all that beach volleyball - but yeah, it would have been better if it opened earlier.

Might pop down there in my lunch when the riding starts tomorrow - no idea what'll happen after work as I tend to get out of here as soon as possible :) The formula for that part of canary wharf tends to be sticking food stalls / wagons on and getting office workers in.

  • Went down last night after work and watched the highlights on the big screen, the area is nice although there's not all that much there. I suspect it would be better when live action is showing and there are more people around.

Not sure if anyones mentioned it, apologies if this has been covered elsewhere - Tour de France fan park starts next Monday at Wood Wharf, 5 mins walk from Canary Wharf station. Should be excellent spot for watching outdoors on a pretty jumbo screen and you have the added delights of sampling cracking grub such as Buttermilk fried chicken from my van, Spit & Roast. Bleeker Burger there too who are ridiculously good, Zan took her inspiration from Shake Shack and ran with it. Discounts of course to any forum peeps, ask for Ross.

I did however get the LFGSS discount at Spit & Roast mentioned there ^ and quite good it was. The burger truck is fine too. Thanks Ross!

  • Went down last night for the 7pm highlights. Seriously, what sort of 'fan park' makes you leave your bike in a bike rack outside the park several 100 meters from the action?!? Fret of having to leave bike out of sight at an unmanned bike rack out on the street killed my buzz at first but my mood improved once a few tasty treats were consumed. Seriously, organisers, this would improve the vibe immensely. (I probably sufferfrom bike seperation anxiety).
Massive screen though and well set up. Bring your own beer.

  • Saw plenty of bikes on the grass by the screen last sunday?
Got some drinks from the bar - shitty service and crap pimms. Lost my sunglasses too. Overpriced merch.

    Bad times.

  • havebike is set up in Green Park next to the TdF fan park today.

If you want your bike safety-checked before watching the stage on the big screen you can find us near the cycle parking area.
