Riding up an awkward hill in Norwich a few days ago - not that long in terms of distance, but plenty of blind corners to complicate riding a changing radient in the middle of traffic. Guy is sat behind me for about the 500m or so before the lights at the top - I'm over to the left, and he could make a risky overtake (as lots choose to do) but doesn't. He passes me with plenty of space as the road straightens/flattens out, but is stopped at the red at the junction in front of me. I roll up next to him, tap the passenger window and gesticulate to wind the window down, cue:
Passenger: [rolls window down anticipating aggro] Wot you say mate?
Me: Oh, I just wanted to thank you for not overtaking me back there and giving me plenty of room - it means a lot to cyclists, and most bad drivers don't do it.
Passenger and driver both break into laughter and assure me that it was no problem at all. I inform the guy that he's a good driver. Lights go green, we both move away. Happy days all round.
