Personally, I'm a fan of getting the fuck off any big streets as fast as physically possible. Riding in London scares me.
I can ride along at a slower pace as long as I'm on little tiny streets, with little or no other bicycle traffic.
The Hire bikes have allowed me to explore new routes away from the crowds, and that's been good.

Possibly a big city problem. It happens when there's a large amount of fast-moving traffic and aggression, I think. If you don't see that combination frequently then you shouldn't be affected as much.

For any other town in the UK just visit outer London. Just as fast, but more hostile and terrifying.

My opinion is that the change needed to get from this to everyone in the road together, all respectfully pootling along at the desired speed of the slowest person, ain't worth it. On roads where speed is a problem, separate, like we do for pedestrians already. Side roads can stay as they are, or better yet, filter the cars out like in de Beauvoir etc.

That might be seen as misrepresenting shared space, but that's what it would have to be to allow anyone to get out riding.

My route to work is all A roads. Periodically I look for another route using quiet, side roads and I have a few that are OK outside of rush hour.

As soon as the traffic gets busier though these become full of cars and you've got a choice of either loads of traffic, buses, hgvs, etc but a bus lane to ride in (for a part of the route) or narrower roads but full of parked cars and "traffic calming" measures so you need to spend the commute out in primary with a queue of angry cars building up who get frustrated and try to overtake at stupid times.

Basically, both are shit options.

Hi Oliver, with regard to Clissold walkabout previously discussed, I heard that there were problems in developing a road scheme for the area previously because of Police routes to and from SN police station which are protected somehow. I'm looking into it.

Yes, that's a known issue. There will certainly need to be a good deal of work with all the emergency services, not only the police.

Interesting stuff. One interesting statistic is the disparity between those who travel to work driving a car or van and those who travel as a passenger.

The big difference suggests that a large number of cars/vans have single occupants which is clearly inefficient.

I have supported Donnachadh, even though I don't fully agree with his style....he genuinely wants to improve things and has put loads of energy into this campaign. His background is dance and the theatre so it didn't surprise me when he came up with this dramatic, possibly over the top stuff. Fine, you don't agree with it, so don't support it, no one is going to insult you because of your choice. Not like the nasty way some people here have chosen to insult those who have decided to support him. Totally incorrectly as well....at least get your insults on target. Sad.

i don't agree with his antics as he sets out to deliberately antagonise the one organisation that could make the most positive impact - TfL.

I've yet to see what he's offering by way of viable alternatives beyond histrionics and affectations. There's plenty of people out there doing good work that don't resort to this sort of am-dram nonsense, yet his fannying about tends to drown out the rest.
