Yeah those posts (I've seen them referred to as a "smooth stud brake pad") are a bugger. Last night I had another go, based on the above, where you set them touching the rim (easier to tighten the bolt while gripping the pads to the rim with one hand) then ease them off with the barrel adjuster.
