London cycling culture and bicycle theft

Posted on
  • Hi everyone
I’m researching London cycling culture for an post-graduate anthropology project and hoping that LFGSS members could take two minutes to fill in a short online survey. The project focusses on urban cyclist’s relationships with their bicycles and I’m particularly interested in hearing from people who have been victims of bike theft – an issue that I assume will have effected many members. The research is being carried out in compliance with Association of Social Anthropologists ethical guidelines and I will not be sharing the information with any third parties.

As a small token of thanks, anyone who submits a form by 30 June will be put into a draw to win a £20 Cycle Surgery voucher (don’t forget to enter an email address so that I can contact you if you have won).

The survey can be found here: http://bit.ly/1ntTOvD

Please let me know if you have any questions or comments.
    Thanks

    Ryan

  • Done. Does anyone really think that a bike defines your personality? Seems odd to think that.

  • A car define very well a personality, a certain type of people buy a certain type of car (show off people would buy a sport car rather than a small run around). I would suspect you can find the same relationship with bike. You buy a performance bike or a cruiser? You don't buy a colorful single speed bike or very fashion bike to go around bricklane/shoreditch without any reason. Probably not as strong as for car but i think it is true as well for bike.

    1. To what extent to you agree with the following statement: "A person's bicycle accurately reflects their character" *

    Tend to disagree

  • Thanks for your replies everyone. The survey has had a great response so far.
    Regards

    Ryan

  • Done. Best of luck with the postgrad!

  • Done,
Will you post your research on completion here please?

  • Done.

  • Hm, I don't think it's submitting it.

  • Worked for me. Good luck with the studies.

  • Done. I'm trying to complete 3 uni essays at the moment so I can share your pain in that. Good luck!

  • Done... I think you need a 'neither agree or disagree' field tho'...

  • submitted. i liked the choice in 8th question what are your motives for cycling - personal freedom. if someone steals my bike they still my freedom. so i printed and put a sticker on my bike with William Wallace's speech:

"Sons of Scotland. I am William Wallace."
"William Wallace is seven feet tall."
"Yes, I've heard. Kills men by the hundreds, and if he were here, he'd consume the English with fireballs from his eyes, and bolts of lightning from his arse.
    (laughter)
I am William Wallace and I see a whole army of my countrymen, here in defiance of tyranny. You've come to fight as free men, and free men you are. What will you do without freedom? Will you fight?!"
"Fight against that, no, we will run, and we will live."
"Aye, fight and you may die, run and you'll live, for at least a while. And dying in your beds, many years from now, would you be willing to trade all the days from this day to that, for one chance, just one chance, to come back here and tell our enemies, that that they may take our lives, but they'll never take our freedom!

  • Done.

Interestingly, despite never having experienced bike theft firsthand, it is something that constantly regulates and influences my behaviours in terms of locking the bike up.

Living in Brighton, it's at the forefront of my mind, and I try to avoid locking up in town if I'm leaving the bike for any longer than 10 minutes (i.e. if I have shopping to do, I'll walk to town rather than cycle, which seems a shame)

  • done.
Thanks to lfgss I am hyper aware of issues regarding mitigation of the theft of my steed. Similarly I am super paranoid about it. So far, zero bikes stolen, thank you very much.
