Black vs Transparent brake pads

Posted on
  • Hello,

I am getting new H Plus Son TB14 rims in polished version and was wondering if anyone has any experience in avoiding ugly black rubber stains on rims by using transparent brake pads? The only transparent ones I could find were really long and not suitable for road use, are there any used in road cycling?

    Cheers

  • It might be worth mentioning that a good part of the stain will be the rim itself being worn away. As you brake with either type of pad a small amount of the metal will be taken off the rim which for most rims makes a very fine blackish metal dust(aluminum oxide). Only way to avoid it building up too much and looking unsightly is spending a few minutes each week cleaning it off.

Disc brakes, brakeless, roller brakes, coaster brakes ect ect.

  • Also worth noting that colour wouldn't be the only difference between black and clear pads, it's likely the rubber would be of a significantly different compound.

Generally speaking clear pads will be for trials and/or bmx where an on/off brake with nothing in between is desirable.

Black should give much better modulation.

I didn't realize it could be the rim wearing away!

    Thanks for your responses.

  • Aluminium oxide is usually whitish. I am pretty sure the black comes from the pads, this is definitely true for plastic mag wheels like you got on BMX's. Had to get skyway brake blocks in corresponding colour to your wheels!
