As far as I know the dome of the tweeter shapes and smoothes out the frequency response and timing. If they were set up in studio like conditions and you sat dead centre you might be able to perceive a difference. otherwise, probably not.
Having said that, it would annoy me greatly. Sounds like it's time for speaker stands and grilles. If you do get stands make sure they're super heavy and stable. Apart from improved sound quality you don't want those falling on your kid!
