I've lived in SS for the last couple of years and while it's not the world's most interesting place, I've never felt that it's dodgy or dangerous (any more so than other places I've lived in London). There are a couple of odd gems (Beehive, San Marco's, market) but you've really got to go elsewhere for nice food, beers, shops. It's really nice and easy to get out to Epping, head up the River Lee navigation, Waltham Abbey, etc. so as a cyclist I've always thought it's pretty well located (and as people have said, straight down the A10 isn't a bad way to get into town). We originally wanted to move to Finsbury Park but being so prohibitively expensive we decided to just live up the road and cycle/walk to FP when we need; I think we made the right decision.
