Seven Sisters

  • Oh do fuck off... There are some horrendous places in London. I would happily sacrifice a vibrant atmosphere of crackheads loitering on my doorstep for safety and peace of mind.

Personally i can't get enough of crackheads loitering on my doorstep.

But then I am a crack dealer so y'know, horses for courses.

  • Ohhh! Loads of Seven Sisters peeps. Lets all meet upp and have a beer (coz it's safer to travel in packs) ;)

I like my flat, converted warehouse, it's a smart space with high celings, but I do want to pick it up and move somewhere else with it.

The thing that '7S' lacks for me is any sense of community. It's got no centre and there are no nice pubs/bars. I'd never go in the pub at the end of my road for fear of my own life!

Try the Salisbury on Green lanes it's not far from you and has a beautiful interior but f*ck me it's pricey for the area.Saying that though the food aint bad.(it's Green lanes after all).

  • I know the Sailsbury, The Faltering Fullback in Findsbury Park is my fav pub in the area, but then it's not really 'in my area' . . .

  • sainsbury's

    Snob, Lidl FTW

    Green lanes gathering?

  • I know the Sailsbury, The Faltering Fullback in Findsbury Park is my fav pub in the area, but then it's not really 'in my area' . . .

both good pubs, but they're still thin on the ground round here, the one at the Highbury end of Blackstock is said to be good, then there's T BIRD of course!

  • I live 10 minutes on foot from seven sisters tube station, in the Bruce Castle area. My comments are:

-- if you like local pubs/restaurants/whatever there is little to it
-- the area looks much rougher than it is in terms of violence or crime. Plenty of ugly faces around but they seem happy to keep to themselves. The local kurdish fraternal organisation seem to disapprove of un-organised crime.
-- According to my neighbours, who lived there for the last 13 years, the place is slowly (slowly) getting better. There are libraries, at least one sport center, some form 'youth' place for gigs --no guarantees it will ever fly mind you-- even a choir.

The areas just off seven sister road and the high road look much rougher than the rest. I would also say you can go to a relatively quiet street to a rough one in walking 1 minute. Bottom line, if you plan to live there and play somewhere else you can find pretty good places. If you want to live someplace 'hip' with plenty of cool stuff to do without you having to look for them, you're less likely to be happy.

  • Green Lanes is great.

My advice would be to not live anywhere in London if you don't like vibrant or diverse places!

    Excuse me!

What I am saying is London is amazing and to live in such a culturally diverse and vibrant city may not be for everyone. There are people who have expressed almost racist views in earlier posts - maybe London is not the place for them.

    Do it! :)

  • I went to seven sisters when visiting tour de ville when it was there. I got a mugging attempt both ways from and back to the tube station.

Based on the fact I was looking very inconspicuous and used to dealing with/avoiding yobs in well rough areas here in brum I dont see seven sisters as being a particularly great place.

Diversity and vibrancy are neither here nor there. Crime and poverty are the issues at hand.

I live in the same building that TDV were in. West Green Road is a bit nasty, but fingers crossed not had any trouble down there.

  • Seven Sisters is grim.

I've lived there, more than a few friends have lived there, not the worst place in London, but certainly amongst them.

Before you - or anyone - moves there, spend an afternoon there, bring food and go tooled up.

  • Bit of a dredge here.

The comments above are not all that encouraging about 7S. However, I am thinking about buying up there. I spent most of saturday and a good portion of this afternoon around there on foot and on bike and it didn't seem all that bad to me. I walked from Manor House to Turnpike Lane and then East to Seven Sisters through some residential streets. I used to live in Finsbury Park but it now costs crazy money to live there. Given how things change over time, is anyone living in the Seven Sisters / Turnpike Lane area at the moment? Like it? Still shitty?

    Cheers
    Joe

  • The Manor House to Turnpike Lane stretch (Green Lanes) has changed quite a bit in the past 5 years.
It's become a nicer place, better restaurants, bars, coffee shops, etc but but it doesn't have the same atmosphere as years gone by.
Personally I like green lanes, plenty of stuff going on but if you get off the main road then fairly peaceful residential areas. I'm not too familiar with East of Green lanes though.

  • Not that shitty. Lived in both Edmonton and Tottenham with daily loitering as a youf around Seven Sisters and yeah sure, bad rep and all, but from SS and down south, it's all peachy. That whole area west of the reservoir has really improved (whatever that means) over the past few years.
For all intents and purposes, I do see it flying rapidly towards gentrification/renovation/whatever. Cloned flats everywhere are cropping up.

  • Thanks both. Looking at the sold prices of houses in the last twelve months compared to now, they have gone up by a crazy amount.

  • I bought in the gardens at the st anns road end beginning of last year. couldn't be happier. Admittedly I eat a lot of turkish food and spend a lot of time in the salisbury. There's lots more buggies and posh coffee shops doing artisan bread and the like as well as a farmers market if that's your thing.

There's a few of us on here in the area, and I've lived all over this part for years now between finsbury park and tottenham proper.

    Good luck!

They have, the suggestions seem to be that they're stabilising a bit at the moment though, albeit at high prices.

  • Only came across this thread, because of the massive dredge, but it's funny reading 4 year old comments based on the huge amount of gentrification thats been happening in the area over the last 3 years. Still edgy but seen a lot of changes since moving from Finsbury park in 2006. I'm near Turnpike Lane end of West Green Rd, so not as edgy, but definitely been incidents - but you'll get that anywhere in London. I'd recommend the place - if you want more info try Harirngay Online forum. Good luck with the search - prices are dropping now, albeit from silly levels

  • Beehive pub in Tottenham is getting lots of good press http://beehiven17.com/

It's a very different prospect to 2009. It's still a bit ragged but if you consider it's got the Tube, overground and several buses to Stokey and beyond, plus one long road down into Shoreditch and the City, you can't go wrong

This is exactly my thinking. I rode up there on Sunday from SE London and it really doesn't take long at all to ride up the way up the A10 from Aldgate.

  • I've lived in SS for the last couple of years and while it's not the world's most interesting place, I've never felt that it's dodgy or dangerous (any more so than other places I've lived in London). There are a couple of odd gems (Beehive, San Marco's, market) but you've really got to go elsewhere for nice food, beers, shops. It's really nice and easy to get out to Epping, head up the River Lee navigation, Waltham Abbey, etc. so as a cyclist I've always thought it's pretty well located (and as people have said, straight down the A10 isn't a bad way to get into town). We originally wanted to move to Finsbury Park but being so prohibitively expensive we decided to just live up the road and cycle/walk to FP when we need; I think we made the right decision.

  • They've made that bit between the station and Tottenham Hale business park two-way now, so it doesn't feel like such a void in that way one-way systems tend to make places feel

  • My sister in law and husband have lived up round 7S and turn pike for a while now, they like it and have been brining up there young son there, they were looking forward to the improvements coming with the new football stauim (spurs urrgh!) and facilities for the area that will bring, money is being spent on the parks just making them nicer places. also the bonus of having some of the best Turkish restaurants in town near by!
