Today on the streets of Utrecht, The Netherlands...

Love the child seat + working cart locking mechanism.

    .

  • Has anyone got any alternative suggestions to Salsa cowbells?

I'm after a drop bar with a bit of flair, nice and flat to the hoods and relatively compact

  • On One Midge, Soma Junebug?

  • I had seen those, both don't seem to have the right transition from tops to hoods. I'm after something like the cowbell, that is a tradition copact drop up top and then a bit of flair on the drops. I know specialized made some for the AWOL, but haven't seen them for sale elsewhere and WTB also made some that I saw on raleigh tourer but again can't find some for sale on their own.

  • Also!

Can anyone recomend a front rack that would work for a salsa vaya that can take pannier bags and also has a small platform for a sleeping bag/mat etc. Would prefer something smaller than one of those huge soma racks or the like,

  • I use this badboy, I fucking love it. One of the sturdiest front racks out there:

  • Even stronger if you drill a couple of holes through the top and fasten it to the fork crown as well. That's pretty unnecessary though .

  • The blackburn outpost world tour rack looks pretty much perfect actually, unless anyone else has any ideas]

  • I like all the blackburn racks.
They should probably be on the tester approves thread.

  • No comparison to Tubus and Nitto though.

  • How so? I've never had a Blackburn rack fail, quite the opposite, they've carried fuck off loads for long tours and transported friends back from the pub, never a problem. Tough as old boots.
Nitto, tubus, omm etc all seem overpriced.

  • In actual fact my gf had a tubus rack and it failed twice mid tour. I'm putting that down to bad luck though.

  • Price wise, the two I mentioned are not made in China or in the same quantities as Blackburn along with their better quality welds (full fill as opposed to one side/spot). The attachment hardware for Blackburn makes for much more flex too (those flat half twist pieces).

  • Nitto - overpriced.

Tubus I like and own one of the rear racks. However they don't make a front rack with a platform. Have you got any experience of a blackburn rack failing?

  • Yep, on holiday.
The flex introduced by the flat steel connectors ultimately caused the slotted rail that they were attached to to fail.

  • Haha it was that point on the tubus that buggered up with my girlfriends rack. Only difference was it was where the little pole connected to the slidey bit on the rack. I think the constant battering from the uneven roads and paths made it come loose and snap.

I see what you mean about the welds but three of my Blackburn racks have carried average weighted blokes loads of times and they've always stayed strong. This makes me think that although the welds might not be as strong as nitto or tubus they're still more than an strong enough for any load you're going to want to carry.

  • I also like the connectors on the Blackburns because they're pretty much universal.

  • Fair enough.
I think the Tubus upper mount post is also the part where weaknesses may be introduced, this is why you have to make sure that the bend that you put into it/them introduces no stress when everything is tightened down.
Tubus provides mounting options for most frames, unfortunately you sometimes have to order them separately.

  • Velo orange campeur front rack put the lowriders lower with better road handling

  • 650B pinarello with pacenti tyres;

Proper pics of the 650b Pina (gave it a wash, removed extra touring stuff):

  • Apropos of the Pacenti tires, which way of mounting them is the right one? I couldn't figure it out, and to add to the confusion the labels are on opposite sides on the two tires. Or does it not matter? It has herringbone file thread on each side of the central diamond thread, but I don't know in which direction the herringbone should point.

  • ^^ the gearing is too high.

  • Deserves reposting

  • ^^ the gearing is too high.

That's an interesting comment, too high for what or whom?
