Be prepared to lose all kinds of cash money. Don't immediately go for expensive modules, start nice and simple with LFO, VCO, VCF, VCA and EG. Despite the price and seeming snobbery, Doepfer do some great stuff, look around on ebay and muff's classifieds. Also spend time reading reviews.
Try and get a multi envelope generator (i.e. x3 separate gens in 1 module) . MFBs are great value. If you have cash, the WMD EG is awesome for sculpting sounds.
Do read the muffs starting out guides as well as the sound on sound series.
