Thanks. Rotating the ring 180deg resulted in the same thing. Back is higher than front. I suspect star nut could be wonky and the bolt's putting more pressure on the front of the assembly...?
I did it myself and it went in wonky, meaning I had to straighten it by eye by tapping on certain sides with a hammer and screwdriver.
