Haha it was that point on the tubus that buggered up with my girlfriends rack. Only difference was it was where the little pole connected to the slidey bit on the rack. I think the constant battering from the uneven roads and paths made it come loose and snap.
I see what you mean about the welds but three of my Blackburn racks have carried average weighted blokes loads of times and they've always stayed strong. This makes me think that although the welds might not be as strong as nitto or tubus they're still more than an strong enough for any load you're going to want to carry.
