• Hi folks. Bit of advice needed here...
My bike, when geared, came with a two-ring (52 and 42), three-arm, Stronglight TS crankset. I've been using the 42t chainring. However, any 'standard' (6.5mm) chainring bolts are too wide for the holes (they fit the 52, but the 52 is too big to fit within the chainstay, plus not my kind of gear ;) ). I have been making do with three bog-standard nuts and bots which fit the holes on the 42 chainring, but they need tightening after every ride and I do not want to skid or put any excessive pressure on the cranks for fear of the bolts sheering.

So, does anyone know of any narrow chainring bolt that fit the smaller chainring?

Or whether it is worth trying to locate a bigger (46) chain ring for the three-arm cranks which might have standard bolt holes?

Cheers in advance for any tips...

  • short stack chainring bolts, try ebay.

  • hey dude back form abroad...are ya still up for the saddle????
yeah if the holes on the chainring are too small you can always drill them to make them bigger or get new ones.....

  • get some spacers from LBS if u don't wanna spend money on new bolts

cheers. Yep, still up for the saddle. Let's sort something out for later this week. I'll send you a text.

I tried drilling out those holes but my shitty drill bits couldn't handle it. But I think that's the answer...

  • What chainset are you talking about

  • i'm buying them for use with some random 110bcd suginos

  • dont think so. you might need spacers to fit them.

  • Can anyone tell me what size of washer is the best to use to make the adjustment to running only a single ring on a double chainset (ie using the same double chainring bolts)?? I dont really have a good way of measuring the diameters precisely enough nor do I know the standard sizes involved, but would like to buy them online....anyone done this before who cares to share a little know-how??

    Thanks!

  • buy single speed chainring bolts, put the chainring on the inside of the spider.

  • I have been doing that, but now have all these bloody double chainring bolts sitting around (literally five sets), so figured I might as well be using those for the several beaters I am building up at the moment...

  • yeah same. Chainring bolts are cheap enough though.

  • Though washers are cheaper, and you know "waste not, want not" and all that....

Thinking that perhaps a double chainring bolt necklace might be a pretty awesome valentines day present....probably going to be very single soon ;)

  • Im pretty sure Ive tried something similar previously, it doesnt work.

Save yourself the hassle and spend a fiver on single bolts.

  • what happens to all those double chainring bolts that get removed ?
do they just sit in the parts box for eternity or until they rust into nothingness ?
    bracelets / necklaces ?

  • I got some from a local hardware store, just went down with a bolt and tried a few till some fitted, they were 5p each. And copper.

  • cool story^

    1. Get an old chain ring and cut off the tabs that usually hold the chain ring to the cranks arm spider. These tabs make excellent spacers. No nice work, doesn't look great but it works well.

    2. Just cut 4 to 5 mm from the double chainring bolts and nuts.

    3. Buy the designated spacers. These are used with several triple cranks sets, CX crank sets, etc.

no minimum orders, nice folk, reasonable prices....(postage high for just 5 washers...bulk order ? ) prompt delivery...

  • Hi guys, I am stuck!

I am putting a new chainring on my bike, http://www.ribblecycles.co.uk/sp/road-track-bike/chainrings-stronglight-zicral-chainring-track-1-8-130-black/strochri255
    this one.

I have removed the old one, but the male female parts bottom out before they meet the chainring. There was previously a double chainring on.

I have searched around and there are talks of filing them down, or using some kind of spacer.

Are there any which I can buy which will just work out of the box, what do I need to look for, just single ring bolts? like these? http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/race-face-replacement-chainring-bolts/rp-prod40501

    Thanks chaps!

  • Yep, just buy some single chainring bolts and they will fit snug.

  • Lovely stuff, thanks a bunch!
