Just trial and error. You can't mess up your ride info as far as I know, but it's definitely a learn-as-you-use scenario.
IMO - best feature is being able to see your best 1/2mi, 1mi, 5mi & 10mi etc. of each ride, in terms of HR, speed. Much better than scanning a ride on Strava analysis and makes it far more easy to identify certain problem stretches of road to target on subsequent rides.
