  • these may be a little wide. i really like them on my town build:

Finally finished this yesterday for my wife. She took it for a ride today and doesn't like the bars. They're too "sit up and beg" for her, so I'll be swapping them out for some lower risers / town bars and a 7 speed thumb shifter. I shouldn't be surprised though, she has been riding nothing but her steel road bike with drops and Campy Veloce. Oh and she doesn't like the Brooks saddle either.

  • Thanks, but I've got the bars and stem from the #cannondalerack, so I'll chuck them on. We also ordered a 7 speed thumb shifter tonight.

  • Chris what bars? They look well comfy

  • The bars on there now are Velo Orange Montmarte.

As I said though, they're too upright for her.

  • Or was that to me Bonor?
They are just cheap ones... bought from a shop near Camden but I think London fields bike shop has them too, £15 or £20 I think...

  • Whoops. Sorry. I read that as "Christ what bars?"

  • Found some time to start building up this lovely Gazelle Cross Trophy.

  • ^ that's lovely, what are your plans?

  • Is that braze-on on the downtube for these?

Yes it is.Tubing is Columbus SP.

I've got some these going spare if you're interested?

  • ^ that's lovely, what are your plans?

Building it up as cheap as possible. Campa 9s, spare parts and used stuff.

Thanks but I have this parts.

  • So here's my latest ride, a samson njs frame that I got from a friend in the US:

And then built with parts I already had, apart from the hs, seatpost, chainring and bars, that I bought/traded.

Couple of more pics on my flickr:

  • Any recommendations for some slick 26" tyres?

  • I have a creaking noise when pedalling. I thought I'd tracked it down to the bottom bracket shell. I was using a hollowtech II BB and the shell hadn't been faced. The creak however is still present. What else should I be looking for?

  • Chainring bolts

    Schwalbe Kojack

  • Is that a Flite seatpost on the Samson?

  • So, silvered it out now, wheels are nice and true and the compact geo called for an inline post. The axle provided by Über_Grüber is not a fit unfortunately so I am on a lookout for a quality ISO BB 110mm (any ideas?). Another set back is that the rear triangle is misaligned. I am to resort to Sheldon's method, should I be worried about fillet brazed stays/ BB?

  • ...alu frame?

those hollowtech bb's are quite short lived
on my single speed mtb i have been having some creaking noises when putting pressure on the pedals with a da 7600 one, i removed the outer shell and dustcover and have added some grease to the bearings which looked completely dry, unfortunately i haven't ridden it since the dismantle and rebuild
will let you know tomorrow if that is a fix

i'd say the bb is your issue

  • just went up and down the road
re grease seems to have had an effect much less creaking
i need a proper hill to fully check it though

  • ...alu frame?

Nope, steel is real! I did however contact the E-bay seller, very interested what he has to say!

  • Is that a Flite seatpost on the Samson?

    It is one indeed.. ;)

  • Still the Pellyeuuuugh. :oP

  • It took a few months but the Croix De Fer is finally completed. It will be my main commuter/touring bike for a good while I hope. I failed to start a dedicated CP thread because of laziness but here it is.

I am now trying to figure out what's the best racks/panniers front/rear combination for my needs, I will end up asking for some advice as soon as I clear up my mind I guess.

Awesome, I think PDWs will be the next step for mine:

Equilibrium Disc rather than CdF but similar. It might not look it, especially in my photos, but it is an awesome bike. Exactly what I wanted in terms of being a fast, practical towpath rider which can double as a winter bike/light tourer.

I have the Tubus Fly rack, I think one which is disc-specific rather than disc compatible rack would have been easier to fit for the mechanic who set it up, but now it's been wrestled with it works well.

Now with the 25mm GP4000s II it flies. I definitely need better pics, and I'd like some skinnier mudguards and new narrower bars without crash damaged tape, but aside from that I love it.
