I'm over it now (what with it being day time) but thanks anyway.

All three soft keys have packed up on my Nexus 4. It's a bloody pain as I have to switch the phone off to change apps at the moment. Doesn't appear to be hardware related as the middle "home" button if held still takes me to Google Now.
Anybody else come across this and/or got a solution that doesn't involve buying a new phone?

Have you tried a reset? https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/nexus/7SNIT8xPYzc

Yep.
Tried reset, safe mode and per the latest comment on that link (I have posted on there too!) tried the developer mode.
My touches in developer mode seem to be registering a touch on or about the soft icons. However, I am still able to open Google Now holding down the home button and dragging up. I dont think this is a hardware issue.

New ROM?

How do i do that then?

I dunno if it would help if you're on stock and a full wipe didn't help.

• #14810
It still happens when it's practically fresh with no apps installed?
-
• #14811
I am on stock and was considering a full wipe - everything is backed up so no major issues in terms of content.
I haven't removed all apps to try that yet but have tried safe mode to no avail.

I assumed when you said reset you meant hard reset, do that after back ups are backed up.

I thought you'd done a reset?
Do the softkeys work when you spin the phone around to landscape?
One of the posters in that thread moves their position with https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ca.yesoft.handysoftkeys -

I think he meant he'd switched it off and on again, like that's a valid IT solution.

Switch off and on is about the best my IT department come up with usually.
Anyway, back to the problem at hand - I have hard reset the phone. That is, I have done a full wipe and reset.
The soft keys still do not work. However, since the reset landscape soft keys are working which they weren't before.

Scratch the above - the soft keys have stopped working in landscape.

It totally is valid.. just not the one we are getting at.

Indeed. Not working after a hard reset is odd. Are you on the most up to date stock software? If not upgrade, if so maybe look at loading up a different version to see if that helps.

So, think I asked this earlier but some basic advice would be great.
I want to root my work Samsung s4 so I can extend battery life, remove all bloatware and items I no longer need, Google Books, etc. Is there a guide anyone recommends? Also any particular rooted apps which are usueful would be much appreciated.

I'm on 4.4.2 which I thought was the most up to date version. Never had any issues with it until today.
Looking through the Google Support forum, this problem is not limited to me and there doesn't appear to be much in the way of a solution. Will probably end up buying a new phone.

^^Search xdaforums.
^Might as well try and chuck cyanogen or something on it first. Can't hurt. -

I realise this isn't necessarily the right place to ask, but does anyone know of a cheapish place to get the LCD repaired on a Galaxy S4 in South or Central London?
Google searches are pretty useless as they just come up with spam for services where you send it away. -

I'd imagine any of the hole-in-the-wall places along Atlantic Road in Brixton would do it...

Was planning to ask around those at lunchtime today. Was just hoping someone had a specific recommendation as LCD repair seems a bit more complicated/expensive than just replacing the glass.

Right, my contract is up and three are offering me 'as a loyal customer' exactly the same offers they're offering to everyone else on their website.
I'm currently on the One plan with a Galaxy s3, want to go SIM only and keep the S3.
I don't *need *that much data, but it's nice to have, same with the minutes. I could realistically go down to 600 mins, loadsa texts and 2Gb data but they're unwilling to go lower than the £15.90 quoted on the site. This riles me. Also, only their one plan comes with 4G data, their other tariffs are 3G only (not an issue with the S3 but I may wish to upgrade in future).
I get generally ok signal with three, but no signal whatsoever in my house in walthamstow and none at my parents' in herts. They've given me a signal booster which I leave at my parents, but I wouldn't mind moving to a proper network with actual signal.
I've looked at virgin mobile, as I'm a virgin media customer but apparently their customer service is awful.
Wat do, lfgss?
Yes, but not as simple as the CM one, which is less than a second, from needing a light to having a light.
