It was a fooking unhelpful post TBH. I'll have a look tonight. I like looking at bikes :)
ED: If you can get that Ventana from the US (shipping, customs...blah blah), I go for it. Ventana are masters with Aluminium.
ED ED: Nope did'nt see anything. add 299 to your budget and get a On-one Ti ;)

Not all the steel frames are heavy BTW. Although if the Kona fits, its a nice frame.

What might be a lighter choice of the steel which are available? I've found a kona unit 2006 to buy from rutland cycles for £150. any good?
... also belt drive? any nice frames that are belt drive compatible? I can't find any. All I can find is the Treck district, but you can't get just the frame. shame as it almost fits the bill - takes 29er wheels, s/s, alu, etc.

I have a Spotbrand Longboad with belt drive. The frame is seriously light for a steel MTN frame, and the complete bike comes in at less than 8.5Kg. I bought my frame as an ex-demo from US-EBay. In the UK you need to look to Sideways Cycles I think.
http://www.sidewayscycles.com/products/index.php?clid=10Bare in mind that putting a beltdriven bike together yourself, is very expensive at the moment. As the components are currently very expensive to buy serparately. I was lucky enough to buy the belt, beltring and sprocket, together with my frame.
One way of getting a frameset with all the specifications you want is to go with XACD. A Chineese custom Ti frame company. For under your £500 budget you could get a Ti frame built to your exact sizing, with sliding drop-outs and a SS coupling for belt installation. I recommend you read around though, as reviews are mixed.

XACD thinking about a Ti bike with them - Road Bike, Cycling ForumsMy personal taste is for a steel frame (OK I'd have Ti if I could afford it). The big wheels make for a slightly smoother ride, and the steel compliments this (IMHO).
If you decide to go with steel. A few people on here have Singular frames and recommend them.

not made by them though.........

Obviously, because its really poor, considering what they have been capable in the past. If they reintroduced their square tubing, and copied your stolen fg/ss PACE, then they'd have people really interested. I think its a bit of a shame really.

Will add that pace.

Resurrecting this: anything new about? Hoping to come into some $$ in the summer and a ss mtb might be on the cards.

Plenty.
Quite a few using rocking/sliding drop-outs With a mech hanger. Which is super versitile.
Charlie-the-bike-monger tends to get a lot a Nice stuff in.

The ( new enough not to be on the list ) Niner ROS 9 is singlespeedable and looks like a lot of fun.

I was going to suggest an On-one Scandal 29er slott drop-out frame. But I cant see any on the site.
The Big unit is a nice choice.
Theres plenty out there, just not so much Alu. The Niner one 9 and the Salsa Selma are nice examples of SS 29er frames but they are around £750. I can think of loads of US based options too.
Ventana have the El comadante on special for $699 for example (http://www.ventanausa.com/). But not so much in the UK.
GA2G. I'll add that one tonight ;)
