  • No the F22 (or even the 'cheap' F16) is very expensive in terms of payload and time on station. B-52 can carry a vast load of the same precision munitions and loiter for hours. Basically permanently on-call CAS from a relatively cheap bomb truck in theatres where the penetration ability of a low-observable fighter is wasted. Cruise missiles are about $750k, the same warhead iron bomb with a JDAM tail kit is about $50k. Drones are good for delivering small loads, but if you want big explosions you need a big ugly fat fucker to carry them.

    Hadn't considered cost.

  • ^^Yeah wing acted like some sort of cutting charge...

    Crazy

  • Also, some of the denser components of the aircraft were found to have gone straight through and landed ahead - one of the engine cores did this.
In fact, some landing gear was more recently discovered wedged between two buildings down the road this time last year.

All the "no-plane" theories just seem to be a form of denial and it makes sense that some people would react that way, as its a horrible thing to have happened. It was such an un-precedented event (no one has ever crashed an airliner in to a mock skyscraper in testing) and so many thousands of eye witnesses that its like that thing about bumble bees: according to maths, they can't fly but they obviously can so the maths were wrong.

  • To clarify... 2 planes definately hit WTC.

Speculation is whether they were terrorist hijackers chancing their luck.

    or

A calculated demolition proportioning blame for exploitation overseas.

    #justsayin #onthefence

  • Aaaaaaanyway.... Less conspiracy theories, more planez.

  • If you were going to speculate for any length of time, there probably ought to be some evidence base for the alternative theory.

I have nothing but bad things to say about GW Bush and his gang, but as far as 11/9 goes, Occam's Razor most definitely applies.

  • 800 KM/H CRASH TEST. PLANE AGAINST WALL - YouTube

the plane seems to vapourise, the bits that appear to go through are i think the wings passing the edges of the concrete block

  • That was a concrete block rather than steel girders and office furniture. It would be great to stand just behind it when they did the test - shit-you-pants scary though.

  • Scale issues aside, the exterior of a skyscraper is more like a sieve than a concrete block.

  • My bike needs that paintjob.

  • Anyone up for chipping in?

"You can fly as low as you want to go really. Anything below 10 feet is difficult to judge"

    I like that.

I love the Ultimate Air Racing aircraft.

I've been trying to to find an online version of a particular Breitling advert for a long time and not been able to find it. It's a chromed Spitfire that was tuned to compete in Ultmate Air Racing and it looks stunning.

  • No price listed on 'Strega'

Ill take a modified Fury pls

  • Tangential question:
Where would you go to see a spitfire show? Ideally near or (easy travel from) London.
Potential birthday prezzie for my brother.

    Duxford

  • Flying Legends is ace...

    You get very close...

  • Not as cool as a full air show but I see this lot flying from Bentwaters quite a lot

Unhelpfully late but there was a free Spitfire aerobatic display at Ruxley this morning.

  • I would recommend the Studio Ghibli animated film The Wind Rises for any plane fans.

It follows a fictionalised version of Jiro Horikoshi, the designer of some WW2 Mitsubishi fighters, but has a lot more planes of that era really beautifully drawn, including a Caproni Ca 60, which I assumed must have been the figment of the filmmakers imagination:

  • Duxford

    100%

They practice displays over our house some times..

Can't see a spit in the air without getting a kick out of it..

Will look out for this, thanks.
