  • Yesterday's ride was a bit of a damp squib - we got the train to Bex, rode up to Villars-sur-Ollon, and then up to Les Diablerets. But then the heavens opened, and the temperature plummeted, and neither of us were dressed for those conditions, so we got the bus down the hill to Aigle and went home.

Much better ride today. We set off from Cycliste's flat, went up the hill via Blonay to Chatel St. Denis, and headed over to Bulle where we treated ourselves to coffee and cakes. From Bulle we went past Gruyere, up on the hill on the left in this picture:

From there we went up to Les Allieres, and on up to the Lac de l'Hongrin (with a puncture for me on the way up there). Lac de l'Hongrin is a reservoir used for hydroelectric energy, with both turbines and pumps so it can be used as an energy store. The dam (an unusual double-curvature design) is in the centre of this photo:

After heading round the lake we set off down the military road - no live weapons firing today:

It's an unusual road as not only is each bridge individually numbered, but there are different, lower, speed limits for vehicles with tracks rather than wheels. At the top of the climb we were treated to a rather splendid view of Lake Geneva.

Just below the top of the climb, down to Corberyere, is a one-way tunnel. If you're going up the hill, you have to enter the tunnel between o'clock and quarter past, and for the way down between half-past and quarter-to. The tunnel's single carriageway, unlit, and has numerous ninety-degree turns in it. Then a quick plummet down to the plain, a gentle ride through the vines:

and back to the train station at Aigle for the train home. Not a bad day's riding:

  • Might well do that.
The real question is, Sa Calobra or flat miles tmw.
If my legs are up to it/ the weather's good Sa Calobra is looking like fun.

Sa Calobra. Great ride. Unless your legs are totally fucked, in which case have a day off.

  • danstuff, you win. Amazing looking ride! Thanks for sharing.

  • apart from some usual local trips, watched the Euro vets champs at Poole-
have a look at this- total brilliant grass roots sport-
    Poole .v. Oxford (Horspath) 20th May 2012 SKY MATCH 1 - YouTube

    No, do it anyway. #htfu

  • Eyebrows, very Jel. Looks incredible. Are you making use of the S&S couplings?

did my usual training loop yesterday. been trying to get my legs back after a very non-active winter... I'm slow. But getting faster. 10 mins into my ride there's a 300m climb over 5km which is good for training, and I go over and back this way each ride, getting marginally better each time. Yesterday I turned myself inside out trying to beat the PB, and off course, my Garmin was being a cunt and had stopped 2 mins out the house. I battered on through clouds of flies and ants and on the sunniest day of the year so far, saw many a Gabba wearer and full kit wanker. But it was good.

On the way back over said hill I big-ringed it for all but the steepest section, and was slower for the privilege, although the wind was against... 65k, 1300m climbyness, watching Giro in the bath, BBQ, lots of bottles of Moretti, sore legs.

I should have gotten up to fulfil my stated ambition of joining a club run today but I'm a sleepy wee bastard and my legs still feel a bit shredded. But I'm not going to get much better unless I bite the bullet as it's hard to push yourself if you're not in a group, so... I just wish clubs didn't all meet at like 8am or silly times far from my house-not everybody has kids they're trying to escape you know! : /

ah is that why you were 'browsing' in Kinoko on friday!?

    So jel!

  • In a step down from everyone else I squeezed in 33 miles yesterday and today I get to sit in a car all afternoon!

  • So I did Sa Calobra.
It was fun and very quiet until after the 360 hairpin where traffic (coaches) stopped me fairly effectively, my lap on the Garmin to there was 34:20, then it took me about 4 mins to finish up... which was annoying, but I caught a couple of riders I'd seen on my descent, which was good for morale.

I'm now fucked, was considering riding to cap de Fermantor, but the wind is up, and the traffic was bat-shit crazy around Pollenca, so first a siesta, and then probably a little spin to Alcudia for dinner.

  • ^ You're a lucky chap. Well done on steeling yourself and doing the climb too

  • Up Layhams, down Titsey, round Hever Castle, up Toys, down Toys, up Hogstrough then back home.

Hogstrough is a BEAST. Finished me off after climbing Toys.

Lovely day out. Getting a decent tan finally.

Somehow, the garmin thinks I started last Sunday....

  • Some awesome riding this weekend - good work all!

Did the King of the Downs today. Gorgeous weather, but felt like really hard work, especially last couple of climbs.

  • ^^^ strong riding there. I was in Ashdown today too doing reps of Kidds and cole hatch, so saw lots of riders doing this.

    Lovely out there today.

  • @uber- I'm not touring so rented a road bike, which worked out as slightly more Ryanair bag cost...
I only need 100more km and I've got to the £1/km for the holiday, so that's looking good- esp as ill do a 'social' ride tmw and then probably head off to formentpr afterwards just for fun.

Yowzers. Big ride indeed and pacey-puts my wee pootle to shame! Chapeau...

Don't know how you can ride the A82 by Loch Lomond though... So fast, and so many cocks that can barely control their cars let alone the huge camper vans and artics that are wedged in on the narrow twisty bits. Stuff of nightmares any time I've been up it.

  • A82 is so grim that at one point we got beeped from a driver for cycling... on the cycle path

it's a real grin & bear it stretch of road. shame because I like riding glen fruin and I think the A82's the only way to access it

thanks for the hats, too. no pics sadly as I use my phone to record my rides and that's strain enough on the battery as is

I'm arriving in Puerto Pollenca on Friday. Have plans for Sa Calobra on Monday to reduce the chances of an inconvenient bus meeting. Any recommendations food or cycling wise welcome.

  • After crashing, embarrassingly and painfully, in Richmond Park last weekend (foul place to cycle on a Sunday anyway), I went out with Lolo and a couple of others for some Kent hills, on a really nice course.

As early as Anerly the scenery was beautiful, the lovely rolling hills all misty. I've been out that way a few times, but I think this is the first that it hasn't been frosty or snowing. I think this is the first time I've done Toys Hill, can't say I loved it but at least it wasn't Chalkpit.

  • River path family ride to Ark Cafe, lap of Sale Waterpark then into Jacksons Boat for a pint before ride home. Gentle. No strava.

    Coffee/ cake wise- https://www.procyclehire.com
Ride wise- there's loads on ridewithGPS, but Puig Major is fun.
The Ride to Sa Calobra is, imo, the hardest part of the ride, because its not a nice run easy get your legs warm before climbing kind of deal. It is a bit better from PP> P I guess, but not easy.
    The ride home is excellent.

Otherwise- Ive been cooking for myself, so Lidl ;)
Aiming for some fresh fish tmw/ tuesday for the BBQ.
There was a place I walked past in Pollenca just now that had an amazing sounding tasting menu... If I find it again I'll post the name up.

  • Update.
Poole beat Horspath away at Oxford today#cyclespeedway whilst I clocked In with a 10 k p.b 40.00 dead in Poole running fest.
    5 year goal reached #running thread >>>>>>>>>>
