  • Yesterday's ride was a bit of a damp squib - we got the train to Bex, rode up to Villars-sur-Ollon, and then up to Les Diablerets. But then the heavens opened, and the temperature plummeted, and neither of us were dressed for those conditions, so we got the bus down the hill to Aigle and went home.

Much better ride today. We set off from Cycliste's flat, went up the hill via Blonay to Chatel St. Denis, and headed over to Bulle where we treated ourselves to coffee and cakes. From Bulle we went past Gruyere, up on the hill on the left in this picture:

From there we went up to Les Allieres, and on up to the Lac de l'Hongrin (with a puncture for me on the way up there). Lac de l'Hongrin is a reservoir used for hydroelectric energy, with both turbines and pumps so it can be used as an energy store. The dam (an unusual double-curvature design) is in the centre of this photo:

After heading round the lake we set off down the military road - no live weapons firing today:

It's an unusual road as not only is each bridge individually numbered, but there are different, lower, speed limits for vehicles with tracks rather than wheels. At the top of the climb we were treated to a rather splendid view of Lake Geneva.

Just below the top of the climb, down to Corberyere, is a one-way tunnel. If you're going up the hill, you have to enter the tunnel between o'clock and quarter past, and for the way down between half-past and quarter-to. The tunnel's single carriageway, unlit, and has numerous ninety-degree turns in it. Then a quick plummet down to the plain, a gentle ride through the vines:

and back to the train station at Aigle for the train home. Not a bad day's riding:
