  • I was thinking about this the other day. I reckon it's a bargain given the recent changes to the hour record rules.

Hutch has been pretty snarky over Fabs having a go at The Hour, given that Trek will throw a load of R&D and tech at it which will diminish the achievement (sour grapes?). So, I was thinking, given that BSI or whoever makes these things have produced the best bikes that current tech allows within the confines of the various UCI tech regs, and now that the Hour record rules are 'UCI track pursuit bike', then anyone that wants a go can just put in an order for one of these and be on a level playing field with anyone else, regardless of how well funded. £100000 is a lot for a fixie skidder or for the odd weekend at Herne Hill, but for competitive sport at an international, record breaking level? A trifling amount. People spend more than that on cars to compete at the lowest level of club racing.

Given that the new rules also have rolled the actual record back a bit and the new current time is silly low (iirc, something like the top two dozen at the last road worlds(?) had an average that would have taken the hour record) someone with some cash can get in there quick before the serious contenders and easily (sort of) take one of the most prestigious records in all of cycling that would normally be waaaaaaay out of reach for them.

How's about it Hippy? Got a few credit cards you can max and the balls to step it up a notch? ;)
