Cptn C'dale Capo BigNose build

Posted on
  • My first proper thread on here so please be gentle... Got this lovely cannondale capo from carbonsinglespeed last week after spotting it while having my 0600 pre dog walk coffee, turns out we both wear kilts and sport ginger hair and freckles so maybe it was meant to be... Frame is bare metal lacquered finish and in pretty good nic so no work required there. An undercoated carbon fork was supplied so plan is to have that painted as it sports considerably less timber than its OG alu counterpart. Had planned on utilising some bits n bobs I seemed to have been inadvertently collecting for this build and just seen where I ended up, then I stumbled across jambons thread, don't intend on simply ripping off his finished article but hey, it looks good... Am fairly set on the silver and black colour scheme and like the look of the black omniums but would happily buck the trend if anyone can advise on similar priced black cranks?? Got a set of high flange polished super record hubs laced to cxp 33s, any advice on a screw on s/s freewheel, anything between £20 for a dx and £75 for an eno? Anyway, please expect crap upside down photos, weeks between posts and every unwritten rule of cool on here to be broken, but hey, least im contributing now and not just scrolling the classified section..

  • All sounding good so far, I think the black/alu colour scheme is a strong look too. Any reason why you're going ss over fixed? Not a bad thing at all just curious as I've equally enjoyed riding ss as fixed come to think of it. The capo is a good platform for quite a few different set ups. What fork also are you planning to fit, I always struggle to find an aftermarket fork that compliments the look a frame.

  • Fork is engraved bontrager at the drop out and is rather svelte in weight with an aluminum steerer, has a shallow rake hopefully not enough to affect the steering or be to obviously not OG. Aside from that its something of a mystery as its been undercoated ready for paint so no other identifying stickers/codes? The s/s wheelset I plan to use was originally built up for another bike so has a few quid invested in it, had the sense to hold onto them when I moved the bike on so really just trying to find a use for them, plus black cxp33/spokes and shiney high flange hubs look pretty good and fit in with plans for build. I've ridden fixed up til now but the ambrosio wheelset I have is all silver (and covered in reflective scotchlite tape for winter cycling) so not as intended though may get thrown on when dark mornings/afternoons return? Ill get some photos up tonight. Am I correct in saying you have black omniums fitted jambon, just wondering how resistant the are to heel rub as this will be an all year round bike?

  • Yes I've been riding my omniums for one year and can't say there's any noticeable heel rub, as an everyday crankset which subsequently are quite nice I'd say they are spot on. The only possible downsides I can see is the combined weight with the Sram external BB, and the narrow Q factor. I remember reading some people ran into problems when fitting them to frames due to the arms striking the chainstays, although I've never had this problem with the capo. Look forward to seeing more pics.

  • Some extra photos... Ritchey wcs bars arrived today, decent ebay buy and feathery light to boot, found a set of nos campag levers I bought for something or other, black and silver so on they go.... forks still needing paint but slid in and only appear to lengthen wheelbase ever so slightly. fancy a black thomson post so will probably go that way with a shorter stem too. Ive got a set of planet x cnc calipers on my road bike which are powerful enough and fairly understated so may go in that direction for brakes? anyway, started with a flourish, not sure I can maintain this pace...?

  • I owned this before carbonsinglespeed. Nice to see it being appreciated by another new owner.

Did he give you the undercoated carbon fork with the frame? If so then I beleive it may have been mine too and it came from a Trek District originally.

  • M/V thanks for that, he did mention he'd bought it 2nd hand himself, its obviously been looked after given its current condition. Noticed there's about 50mm clearance between the rim and the brake drilling on the fork and only 30mm on the frame, need to investigate this prior to caliper purchase?

  • Yeah the District definitely had bigger clearances, I ran it with full guards f&r but you'd no fit that in the capo eh? The brake calipers on the district were just oem on the build so couldn't tell you if they were deep drop or not.

  • been a quiet week on the plundering of bike bits front, 90mm ritchey wcs stem arrived from ebay to replace the scaffold pole like oe stem, had a go at removing the ritchey graphics with the wifes nail varnish remover (a task which has proved successful previously) but failed completely, any suggestions...? also been busy attempting to persuade Dammit to post me his 3t funda forks, with little or no success, any kind hearted soul bored enough to be reading this happen to know him and maybe be handy with the old jedi mind trick or casual hypnosis? Jambon had something similar on his capo and they looked the part, so if somebody on here (not called jim) could fix it for me to get those forks......

  • i hope you get the forks sorted!

i have to say, the bar to hood transition looks terrible.. better get that sorted for yo wrists.

p.s.: i hope you don't sport a kilt when riding this...

  • Yeh, nothings positioned as yet, just placed together for the photo, not using the stem or fork in that photo. Normally wear a mini kilt when I'm on a bike, far more practical...

  • I commented on carbonsinglespeed's FS thread saying exactly how cool these frames are, I've had one (albeit officially a Cannondale Track CAAD5) for over a year now and it's all kinds of awesome - hopefully a bit of inspiration

  • Hey Dick, that is a sweet bike, the silver cranks work well too, I plan on going with black but least now I know if nothing turns up...realise the capo was an off the peg type and likely a fair bit cheaper to buy new but to my naked and untrained eye there doesn't appear to be much to separate the two, both are caad5 so aside from the geometry is there anything obvious?

  • I honestly don't think so, the tubing is pretty much identical, I think it was simply the difference between the livery - this used to be in Team Saeco colours until it was stripped.

  • Glad to hear that, the thought there was something similar but slightly different and certainly more scarce so obviously better would certainly prove to be a seed of annoyance in my increasingly ocd head. Plans are a changing slightly, managed to pick up a set of brand new double fixed miche wheels on nice black rigida rims so the afore mentioned super record/cxp33 combo will be hitting the classifieds soon as I have boxes to post them in. Still no forks, still hopeful of good news from dammit.....

  • Two weeks on... Managed to get my paws on some 3t funda pro forks off the bay for much cheapness, problem, they're painted white as off a cervelo rs, solution, wetndry paper and some blisters..?? Question, id like to replace the 3t decal and the long strip down outside of fork leg, ideally in black and if possible with a reflective finish kind of scotchlite style, if this is possible any ideas who could make the decals up?

  • I've sanded a carbon fork down by hand before to remove the paint and it's hard going. It's probably not worth saying but a rattle cat respray will never be as durable as the original finish. Good to see the project is starting to take off.

  • Forks have landed, a trip to b&Q now required for abrasive paper a plenty, plan is to cover in copious coats of non shiney laquor once sanded back to protect? and show of carbon weave and new scotchlite emblems if I can find someone to make them up?

  • Any colour other than white, need to start with the wet n dry and not just look at them....
