  • Hi all,

finally decided to built my first cyclocross bike,
trying to make this a budget build, hopefully under $1500 total

i've got a freebie Deore XT RD m750 and crank m751 to build around,
but still considering 105 groupset, either 5700 or 5800 if the price difference is not too high.

for the wheels, considering shimano r501.

hoping from some input as this is my first :)

    Build list
Frame+fork: Colossi Rambler CX size 52
Wheelset: Tiagra 4600 32H laced to H+son Archetype
Tyres: Maxxis Larsen Mimo CX 32c
    Seatpost: FUNN Arrow
    Saddle: ???
    Stem: UNO 90mm
    Handlebar: Ritchey Logic curve comp
    Bartape: fizik ?ultralight?
    Cables: jagwire road pro gold
    Brake: Shimano LX cantis
    Crank: XT m750
    Front Derailleur: none for now
    Rear Derailleur: XT m750
    Rear Sprocket: tiagra 4600 12-30
    Chain: XT hg-94
    Shifter: Tiagra 4600

    Total cost:£600
    Current

    cheers,

    Dave

    "budget"

  • A nice frame for a winter roadbike. Is there a UK dealer?

  • I hope they put the decals on the right way round.

  • :-)

    The rear wheel too...

  • Hope so! :)

  • Anyone got an opinion on shimano wh r561 wheels? NOS for 100£ish
    To low spoke count?

  • I'd want something easily/cheaply rebuildable for cx.

    Also wider if possible.

  • I've used some lower end low spoke count RS20 wheels before for cross and they were fine despite being a heavier (84kg) rider. Depends how hard you ride and your weight!

Plus if they're well maintained, checking spoke tension before hammering them.

  • currently considering the following for wheels:

new mavic open sport + 105 5500 hub+ dt swiss comp spokes £150ish
    Shimano wh r561 wheelset NOS 16h front + 20h rear £100ish
both are bit narrow, but i've seen them paired with 35c tyres, so should be ok?

used Archetype + 105 5500 hub 32h front and rear + dt swiss comp spokes £150ish
    new TB14 + 105 5500 hub 32h front and rear + dt swiss comp spokes £150ish
these two width wise should be perfect,

the prices for the built wheels are if i do it myself ( which i never done but would love to try).

  • Archetype will be the strongest and probably the easiest to build. TB14 will be the most comfortable and has a little more material on the brake tracks.

Have a read of this perhaps.
    And this.

    Will 5500 hubs run 10sp?

actually i'm leaning on the archetype, but there's almost no price difference when comparing to the others which is new stuff.
just need more self convincing :)

there some discussions when i googled it, but it seems it's no problem using spacers
also rivendell advertise them as 9 or 10 speed.

thanks for the links, i'll try to read them.

  • These just came

  • Don't know if this is any good, but 15£ for the pair seems quite a bargain :)

hopefully this month the build can start

  • The frame and fork have arrived!!!!

    am i missing something?

  • daveaa: how tall are you, and how long are your legs? Need to know to help a friend (planning to buy a Rambler CX as well)

  • I'm about 5'8. Not sure about the legs, but if not mistaken last time I measured them and use the rivendell way of measuring seatpost length I got 71cm.

    Hope that helps.

  • Latest components update
    Bartape: fizik ?ultralight?
    Chain: XT hg-94
    Rear Sprocket: tiagra 4600 12-30
    Cables: jagwire road pro gold

Decided 1x for now, so only needs deciding on saddles. Leaning more on charge knife at the moment.

  • Hi, Rivendell means inside leg minus 10 = seat height from BB.
Does that mean your legs are 81cm long then? That would be just the same as that friend of mine.

Does 52 fit you well or do you think it could be 55 too? (Considering my friend (5'11 but very short legs) is going to use that frame with short stem and risers)

  • Btw, could you post an image of your lower half of your body while riding the bike? That would be helpful!

Had to look it up again, but yeah that's it.

Admittedly still deciding on stem height, length and angle. But 52 feels right for me, especially since I'm mostly concerned on TT length then ST, and actually prefer shorter ST.

Btw, could you post an image of your lower half of your body while riding the bike? That would be helpful!

I'm out of town until Monday, hopefully then.

    Cheers,
