• What about fuel though?

Would it be ok for driverless cars driven around without a driver?

The fuel usage will be minimal for individual cars, as they would almost always be in use, so fulfilling their purpose (if not electric). The ideal scenario would be as little cars on the road, and the ones on the road would be in use. Peak times = more cars that are used to 100% capacity.

The completely driver-less part of the equation is very possible (I'm with Hippy and frankly, can't wait for our robotic overlords to take over), if legislation doesn't quash it. Speed limited (25mph) independently of the main AI, the car isn't likely to become a (within reason) hazard on the road and thus wouldn't require supervision. I imagine for the sake of safety, the main systems would have double layer redundancies like the space shuttle or something.
I'm speaking as a an enthusiast though, so for all I know, all this means fuck all.
