Surly steamroller or pompino?

Posted on
  • So I'm finally getting round to getting a new fixed built. I'm pretty set on a steamroller but the pompino is good value, a build is about £500 as they've gotten some sale stuff...

So a reasonable build steamer for a grand or a good value for money pompino? Any thoughts appreciated.

  • Well, both made in far east, both have shit logos/graphics, both take biggish tyres, never ridden a pomp, but on one are from Yorkshire, so Surly, spend that little bit more, you know it makes sense.

  • That welded lump under the downtube on the pompino doesn't exactly fill you with confidence, have you considered the cotic escapade? similar price to the steamroller but takes disc brakes.

  • That welded lump under the downtube on the pompino doesn't exactly fill you with confidence.

Ironically, it should. It's evidence of a frame designer recognising and remedying what they perceived to have been a prior weakness.
I don't think I've seen a Pomp crack anywhere other than the chainstays.

  • i think im going to get a pomp. only looked briefly but cant seem to find any surly stockists in the uk which actually have any in stock..

  • Have you tried Triton?

  • ah cheers, but i dont have £300 anyway! ;)

  • I commuted on a pompino for 2 years. I would occasionally ride it at weekends for a 25/30 mile outing. Whilst sturdy, the pompino, especially with the stock forks and weinemann deep rims felt like a ship's anchor - it was a really heavy bike. I sold it on and last October put together a roller. The roller is lighter, feels quicker and is so comfortable. Rides of 40/50 miles are now no problem. Whatever your choice buy decent wheels, a decent bottom bracket and pedals

  • ^^What size are you after?

^ I have ridden both. I have the roller, but the pompino has bigger tubing but it is not overly heavy. The difference could have been your wheelset and tyres that made it seem that way.

Priorities for mine were lightweight fork and modern hollow cranks with external BB. Biggest single weight savings you can make on that (or almost any other steel) frameset, imo.
The stock fork is a bargain if you just need to get it rolling, but anyone even vaguely concerned with weight on a Pomp, Surly or even All-City would switch it out for CF.
Not difficult to see how some of us end up with 'pimp pomps'...

  • Been thinking about the same for a while but ill go for a Steamroller.

  • ^^What size are you after?

i think they come in 59cm, if so thats the one! maybe steamroller would be better. im no weight weenie but cant be bothered with heavy frames.

  • pompino in medium is 3160g

    steamroller in 56cm 2850g

    both uncut steerer

  • I built a steamroller up and had to move away for work... it was a gem to ride- mines a 59 and its not too heavy.

  • i don't think Surly's forks are bad at all, with the LHT and the CC forks having a plethora of eye's and mount's, they have superb comfort along with the Pacer and Roller forks. weighty yes, comfy, hell yeah!
