• Okay, so I just picked up an absolute beaut of a frame from french ebay to act as a base for a light touring build that's (hopefully) gonna take me from London to Rome this summer. I'm gonna load it up with old Campag goodness. I'm so excited. I had to share!

    The frame:
I have no idea of the framebuilder or tubing - any help would be massively appreciated. I'm guessing it's 531db as it has a 26.4 seatpost and french bb, and feels super light. It has a Zeus 2000 fork crown and dropouts/ends (with mudguard eyes), long pointed lugs with heart cut-outs, and half-chromed forks, rear triangle, and headtube lugs. Lots of lovely detailing too, like the reinforced brake bridge and bottle cage mounts.

    The drivetrain:
I've always dreamt of building something up with 80s Super Record, that silver cursive campagnolo on black just looks phenomenal. I also have to be practical though and chuck a triple with a granny gear on the front. So I've picked up the following parts so far:

    • Super Record rear derailleur
    • Mirage T front derailleur (with black detailing to match the rear)
    • Veloce Triple crankset (52-42-28)
    • Band-on Simplex Retrofriction shifters

    The wheels:
I was after some nice high flange hubs for this build, and managed to pick up a pair of Nuovo Tipos (with oil ports - unusual?) laced to silver Weinman 700c rims. They look the part and seem to be solid enough.
Still need to find a 7 speed freewheel though, working out ratios now. Any suggestions for manufacturers (for under £20)?

    Other components:
Going for that classic Italian look, so have the following other bits:

    • 26.4 SR laprade fluted seatpost (going to paint in the fluting)
    • Brooks professional saddle (dark brown, copper rivets, will take from my training bike for the tour and replace with a suede saddle for commuting)
    • Cinelli 1a stem (older style, no logo)
    • Weinmann drilled levers with dark brown hoods

    Still to find/advice please!:

    • Nutted callipers with 57mm drop
Was thinking Shimano 600ex long reach for practicality's sake - any suggestions?
    • 7 speed freewheel
    • 26.0 bars, 44cm wide
With nice logos would be grand- again, any suggestions?
    • French threaded bottom bracket
Will probably have to go with a Velo Orange unit. Does anyone know what axle length a triple Veloce takes?
    • 700x25/28 tyres for touring
Any recommendations? Will only be used on tarmac/gravel so nothing too chunky!

All this has been done on an extremely student budget, which is why I haven't been able to have exactly everything I'd like. Shit gets expensive yo.
Can't wait to finish it though, I haven't been this excited about anything in a while. The frame's amazing!

Pictures of everything to come soon, thanks for reading :D

  • paging BigH for frame ID

project sounds nice - i'd go with universal brakes and levers just to keep it italian as much as possible :)

  • schwalbe marathons are just excellent, they just werk, and they go down to 25c, they last for 1000's of miles and they're about £30 a pair from various sites

deda piega's are £18 from wiggle and are compact 26.0mm's, mine should arrive tomorrow.

Do yo think you might opt for a taller stem ?

  • I've got a Daccordi with Zeus frame parts. Nice fork crown, but I've also seen them on a few British built bikes. If your North/North West it could be an MKM form Blackpool. They have a frame registry. They were very fond of the micro cast fork crown.

It might well be a Mercier though, with the French BB....

Thanks bud, might drop him a pm once I have some pictures together. Was thinking about universal too, but a little bit of reading has convinced me that Japanese callipers tended to be bulkier/better, which is gonna be important for a loaded tourer (camping/cooking gear etc). We'll see though, I'm still browsing ebay to see what comes up!

Amazing thanks for all the advice! I know with a tourer this should be the last of my worries but do Marathons still feel reasonably fast? I love cycling, and really don't want to deaden the feeling... As for bars I think I'm going to try to keep it old school with Cinelli to match the stem - love the sight of a Cinelli stamp peeking out from between bar tape!

That Daccordi sounds lovely, the Zeus fork crown is absolutely one of my favourites - I've always wanted a frameset with one. Didn't know that about MKM, would be great if that's what it was!
As it stands though with the french bb and seatpost size I'm fairly certain it's french-built. The guy I bought it from was based in South-West france. I was actually watching a nearly identical one on ebay that had a watermark for a 'Cycles B', a small boutique framebuilder based in south france. I reckon that's what it'll end up being, so I just need to find someone who knows a thing or two about small french framebuilders!

They seem fine to me, I've used vittoria rando's but prefer these, I have them on 28c at the moment on my steel tourer they're heavier and something like vittoria randonneurs will probably run faster. But the safety comes with the weight, I bought mine at christmas and must have at least done 1000 miles since then and only got one puncture the whole time, they just werk. I plan on touring Iceland in april next year and will bring these for the protection against the gravel roads there

Edit: here's somebodys blog detailing the difference between marathons and a lighter touring tire: http://www.patricksvelolog.com/2013/08/a-test-of-many-miles-vittoria.html

Gatorskins might be better because of the weight difference but I guess you limit your terrain a bit more with them, never had them so can't really comment.

Any thought for a dynamo wheel?
