Tony Rominger took his through three teams, sticking two fingers up to the 'Management ' and only agreeing to repaint it after a lot of huffing.
I saw him riding the SAME bike at his Rominger Classic from Vevey to Crans Montana in 2006 and he was still tanking it along ') -

If you look at the item history, this is the NINTH time the guy has tried to sell it to no avail. He cites 'frame issue's in response to the reason why.
Like I said, a good clean twin Carbitubo frame - £800-1000

Arrival of a C40 project forces sale, that and the fact that her indoors has a strict 'one in/one out' policy on bicycles :)
How about "one bike in, one 'her indoors' out"?
I am so lucky that my other half seems to take the view that if its in the garage, and I'm not telling her its baked beans on toast for the month due to overspend on vintage steel, then its OK.
Bump for a beauty.

i met an ex rider who did paris roubaix on his, and still has it in his garage
how do you find the geometry compares against your c40 ?,(is it a hp?)

I've only ridden a C50, this is my first C40 and like the Carbitubo I'll be going for a full Record Carbon build with Shamals. It compares very well to the C50, about 80g heavier frame but extremely comfortable over long distance. Rominger was of the same opinion :)

• #17
size comparison wise, do you find the geometery different to the c40?
I have c40 hp and c50 hp, geo wise, these frames are smaller than what i ride steel on,and i find the geo on my carbitubo mono to be more similar to steel geo as it does not have the seat tube clamp
I'm currently looking at a 1st gen c40, with steel forks, and I find these to be similar geo to c40hp and c50hp -

The first gen duo had lug problems. I've steered well clear. This being a handmade team issue bike I'd say it was more like a regular geometry, and 57cm square so no daft angles to upset the ride quality.
I also have the original (to this Carbitubo) owners extreme lo profile which was ridden at the 1988 Seoul Olympics and the 1989 world champs. Have provenance!!

I didn't think they were ever made with daft angles, they were similar to the master as far as I understand, this is mine, never seen another in the same mapei gb decor

Rominger in typical flat out Mapei Carbitubo duo guise. This is the very frame he was STILL riding 'competitively' in 2006 at his own Rominger Classic.

Cheers. It's good to chat to a fellow Mapei enthusiast! The C40 I got is in black with the multi coloured Mapei squares. Yours looks sensational.

thanks, took me a while to identify, in mock up state in pic, i have da 7401 with stem, saetpost is a bugger to find as is Alan dimensions, current is superbe pro
glad to hear Rominger rode them so late, because as far as i knew the carbitubo was first issued circa '88, and Mapei gb was circa '96
wasn't been fippant re, geometry, i got sent this pic of a 1st gen c4o mapei, and i think these are a different geo to the carbitubo/master form

seeing as you seem to like Rominger,
a while back a wrench for a quite big collector came to see me, and showed me some of what the collector has, this is one, Rominger's tt bike, in Columbus Ego

I've got a 56cm gen 1 C40 myself, haven't built it up yet but placed it side by side a 56cm Colnago Super and it looks pretty much identical geo. Maybe 0.5cm in the seat tube, which is nothing. I've found I've been able to make just about any frame less than 58cm fit me! For everyday cycling I'll ride a 55.5cm Daccordi TSX.
Sizing is a bit of old cobblers imo. Just about anyone can ride a bike within a 1.5cm range, given saddle and bars adjustment. Oh to be pro and get every bike millimetre perfect!
I was chatting to Rominger after the race in Crans Montana, top bloke, and like nearly every Swiss rider there, all Colnago fetishists. Rominger has SIX carbitubo bikes (count em). He also owns a garage full of Joker C4 which he apparently bought at a bankrupt sale when they went belly up. Daresay they'll wind up on eBay one day...
NOW SOLD
57 cm square Carbitubo. The frame was acquired from an ex German National Team rider. They were painted in a set of six by Colnago for the team. Uwe Ampler rode one of these!
The paint its pretty much immaculate. No dings or serious chips. The photos tell the story. Campagnolo Record carbon 10 spd groupset, including headset. Shamal Titanium HPW 10 spd wheels. New Flite saddle, Cinelli bars and stem. A no expense spared build. It's a joy to ride and Tony Romingers favourite frame of all time! Colnago panto on nearly every lug and frame fitting, all picked out in pukka gold leaf. Arrival of a C40 project forces sale, that and the fact that her indoors has a strict 'one in/one out' policy on bicycles :)
Groupset/wheels and finishing kit cost over £1400. Good clean frames like this one sell £800-1000.
£1600 will post within EU.
