Ho rides his around brakeless and don't seem to have any problems.
I've ridden mine brakeless a bit, but it's usually while on my way to the velodrome so can't skid anyway as the tyres will die. They are certainly secure enough, the only downside is when stopping at traffic lights, if you press down on the pedal as it comes up to slow down it is very easy to clip in by accident.
