Love Hawksmoor, hate this sort of reverse snobbery
"Seven years ago we took on a failed Turkish restaurant at the dodgy end of a dodgy East London street and knew that we wanted to turn it into a temple to steak."
Don't really consider the City end of Commercial St east london and 7 years ago it was well and truly gentrified.

Only time I've ever been offered business, unsolicited I might add, was down Commercial Street of a Friday evening a few years back. So blunt was her opener* (why wouldn't it be if that's your earner - no sense skirting the issue) I made her repeat herself as I was sure I'd misheard/understood.
Turned out I hadn't and she could have been mine for the evening or 10 minutes, however I liked it. I'd declined and scurried to the nearest club before a price had been suggested, so cannot verify your pal's claim. I often think about her and what could have been, but I feel I made the right choice leaving her brokenhearted..
*not a euph.

^^Yeah man it was good. Pastrami and mustard on rye (with caraway seeds the way God intended when He invented it.) I guess I was sticking with the Jewish food theme.

Spectacular lunch today at O Cantinho... Deep fried breaded Octopus and migas; fried rice, black eyed peas, spinach and breadcrumbs...
Fucking amazing... Never seen it on the menu before, one of the best things I've ever eaten...
