Great idea with the multi material that wraps around the frame.
I would think testing the lock while fixed to a post and bike would be better as you can tension the thing which would change the effectiveness of the tools. In the vid where you've got the lock spinning, tangled around a 'big dremel' (don't know the name), this looks silly as the lock would never free spin like this when tied to a post and bike frame.
Would also like to see it chained through the back wheel and frame for destruction testing.
Great start though and looking forward to seeing the subsequent upgrades.

I like the miami vice outfit in the beginning.

I didn't realise that it was 2 chains. That is a good idea, but if that makes it the same weight as one properly hench chain, which is properly uncroppable, then it reduces some of its appeal. It would be useful in the video to see more of the internals of the chain
My suggestion would be to layer it up as follows (from inside --> out): chain(s); chainsaw fabric to protect chain from power-tool cutting; multiple thin (2-3mm?) steel cables run lengthwise to protect chainsaw fabric from knife/scissors, fabric cover to protect frame. That way you'd have to cut off the outer fabric with a knife/scissors, snip all the cables with wire cutters/pliers, cut through the chainsaw fabric with knife/scissors and then crop/angle-grind the chain. The weakness would still be tension attacks e.g., jack or scaffold pole.

Neat!
You got some good advice here, go for (much improved) Mark II and post it here! -

Great Idea! I look forward to seeing an update if you wish to pursue it, some other locks who have shown how they R&D are...

Right thanks again everyone, I will come back when I've perfected this thing.
I've put it on Kickstarter now, just waiting for it to be approved :)

Nice, I see one problem though,
how are the majority of your target market going to fit a padlock into their skinny jeans pocket?
-
• #34
I'm really liking this design. Especially as a secondary lock to go with my FAHG.

^^How about a loop in the cover to clip the padlock through when the rest is fastened to the top tube? The lock would dangle out of the way under the top tube.

Nice idea, like it. Would like to see the destructive testing redone with the lock actually in place to mimic real-world conditions, though. Agree that an aftermarket lock cover for assorted lock types would likely be very popular, too.
PS: The name of the lock made me smile

If it was called the Dench Lock I would definitely buy cause everything I do is dench.
-
• #38
Blimey, are you still on that.
It was one night four years ago and she never called you afterwards.

Haha I was going to call it the Dench lock but my lecturer said it wasn't a good name!
Yes I agree that the padlock is the weak point, and like I said, if it goes on sale, more development will see the locking mechanism combined inside the main body :)

+1.....nice work!

+1 for dench

Ha, thought I recognised those walls.
Was it filmed in Mapperley Park? The road looks familiar...

The material messing up an angle grinder is (if it's all it seems) really impressive.
Well done, keep improving it.
I'd guess it has a future as an aftermarket sheath for chains.

Haha yes Mapperley Park and outside Trent Uni :)
Cheers!

What street was it? It looks like my road, but the gravel box doesn't match up...

Use a bigger grinder with a cutting disc and try to cut it like you mean it...
-
• #47
I like that a lot
Great work

This crossed my mind too.

Nice work
Make the fabric available in one or 2 colours (with your name on it somewhere)
Go with Dench if you can.
Best of luck with the course and also the kickstarter campaign.

Mapperley Rd and a bit of Elm Bank I think :) Whereabouts are you?

Yeah the idea would be to have various different colours as well :)
Thanks a lot
Well ... it's a D-lock. It's made of two parts. Two parts of your lock cover could slide on to each part, and when the D-lock is locked, neither can be slid off.
It would leave as the only vulnerability the point where the two parts come together, because there would be a gap between the two halves of the cover. That might not always be the most convenient point for attacking a D-lock.
Thieves would probably go for skeleton keys, anyway.
