I guess so, it seems to put focus in a place where there maybe shouldn't be.
If it wasn't there, maybe the space would seem awkward.

I'm interested to know what the top rivals all are, got a lady friend that would like to get a digital compact but I don't know enough about them and have been impressed with what I've seen of the ricoh

Depends what you define as compact and what the budget is etc. Fuji x20 is compact-ish and excellent, as is the Sony RX100. The Ricoh GR is better still and quite pocketable.
That said, most of my favourite photographers use low-end point and shoots or even just their phones...

You'd be surprised how many people (photographers and normals) would dismiss the GR purely on account of it not having a zoom lens.
Unless your lady friend is aware of the limitations, I'd say RX100 II is the pick. -

thanks for all the comments guys, first time i'd shot DH stuff, was an awesome experience, should hopefully be re/visiting some different trails in the summer. cant wait!

here's a slightly off topic Q...
i've just had som photo prinnts made at boots on (from the writing on the back) Fujicolor crystal paper (no idea of the actual machine) i was hoping to be able to use a solvent to melt/dissolve/distort the print to try and create some sort of effect a bit like the Peter Gabriel sleeve:Trouble is neither Swan lighter fluid or even Nitromors (the good stuff) effect the prints at all...! does anyone know of a solvent the will dissolve the print...?
seriously surprised the Nitromors does nothing..!
and yes, i know the Peter Gabriel one was done by squeezing a polaroid, just a way of explaining the sort off effect.....

The distortion you're after can never occur (or be made to occur) in a C-type print. The silver halide layers of these prints aren't malleable like the material found inside a Polaroid, and the distortion of Polaroid images is only possible by physically disrupting the actual chemicals during the development process. Metaphorically, it's a similar idea to smearing your fingers all over a C-type print whilst it's in the Dev bath (which wouldn't actually work).

Have i got C-type prints? i always assumed that digital prints as i got from Boots would be some sort of inkjet as opposed to the exposing of a film paper and that i'd be able to fuck with the ink that had been laid down onto the paper....
sorry if i'm just being dim about the way digital prints are printed in these labs...

Labs produce Digital C-Types.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chromogenic_color_printEven if they were Inkjet/Giclée/IRIS prints (the most common alternative), you still couldn't melt the ink to distort it in that way.

I'm guessing there's already a touch-based iOS app for mimicing the old Polaroid emulsion-manipulation shenanigans? If there isn't, there should be. Should keep even the hippest IGers amused for at least two weeks.

Yeah there probably is some Combination of Photoshop brushes that might do it, I'm actually trying to do some photomanipulation outside of the computer to try and keep my sanity at work....! Bored of using computers all day!

As promised, more bike photography, this time road cycling.
I've been getting to grips more with off camera flash/mixed lighting situations and really starting to enjoy the look, The last 2 are mixed lighting, the climbing one being my favourite. Not quite got the hang of panning shots, maybe i should have had a higher aperature and boosted a bit more light in there to freeze a little him more? also i think rear curtain sync could have helped which i realised when we started shooting and couldnt change as I didn't know how to out in the middle of the peaks -
