I didn't find the Tim Hilton book dry: I really enjoyed it. I probably prefer this type of cycling memoir book than biographies and autobiographies of the pros (see also Matt Seaton's 'The escape Artist'.
Having said that, I have read and would recommend, 'Slaying the Badger', 'In search of Robert Millar', 'Half Man Half Bike', 'Domestique', and particularly 'A Dog in a Hat'.
