For the 100 quid it would cost to go fat front, there's no reason not too. Can your rear take a 2.5? Front 3 and rear 2.5 is a pretty good compromise for minimal spending, no?

Put my 2.5'' tyre on the rear the other day and no, it doesn't really fit but current frame is only temporary. I fancy one of the superraw On One Scandals, think they can fit a 2.5'' tyre in the rear.
Fat front is nearer £130ish once you factor in spokes, rim tape and a tyre.
