Is this holdsworth worth saving?

  • Mate works at a scrap yard and I noticed an old racer with a holdsworth badge, looks like it's been brush painted in white emulsion and left to die in a garden for years, total mess. Components look fairly crap, huret mech, ancient brooks saddle, steel rims. I stupidly didn't take any pics, but where the white paint has chipped off I noticed it was gold/orange underneath, so a quick google for a "gold holdsworth" came up with this which is very similar. Couldn't see any reynolds stickers under the white paint, oh and it's a tinnnyyy frame, likely a 46 or something.

Here's the question, is it worth saving? Or is it a low end gas pipe bike? The stem is exactly the same as the one in the pic which looked fairly low end to me...

  • Would you or anyone you know take the time to make it ridable? If so, the answer is yes!

  • i told you about that brooks of mine, was old and decayed but now nice suede
    worth saving for that alone

  • If you know someone that will ride it then yes. Even old gas pipe frames make really nice bikes. The kind in the pic has some nice details like the stem. Do you or anyone have the elbow grease available to bring it back to life?

  • I'll have the headtube badge if you don't want it, That'll look reet tasty on my old Holdsworth

edit, even if it's covered in paint

  • I guess I'll be dragging it home next week then! I certainly could make it look a lot better but what with it being so small i'd probably pass it on to someone more suited, the head tube badge was actually masked off for the "respray" and is a lovely piece of brass. The brooks wasn't falling apart, just worn from use so I'm sure someone can save it.

I guess the old girl deserves to be saved.

  • Chances are its a Holdsworth Equipe. A fairly low end bike, nondescript frame tubes with 531 forks. Crudely finished lugs and pressed dropouts without a gear hanger. Components were whatever was cheap at the time.

I rescued one from the local recycling: blue and orange paint job was still more or less intact. Suntour 5 speed, Weinmann centre pulls, steel rims. Probably manufactured in mid 70's. Made a nice single speed town bike.

  • i had an old carlton gas pipe wreck frame which was painted in emulsion, ended up stripping to bare metal and covering in linseed oil, looked really nice when fully built up - it's worth doing, someone can love it again.

  • The head badges are worth 30-40 nicker alone, if you can find a good painter or powdercoat it you'll have a lovely bike build. Holdsworth generally Reynolds 531, some variation of it. Best thing to weigh it. Should come in under 2000gr for the frame, forks extra.
