So I'm back from a 5 hour stake-out of Bricklane market earlier this morning. Boring as fuck but quite illuminating. Lots of bikes being sold for pennies with people able to easily haggle them down for a quick sale - if you had absolutely no scruples and a grand to spare then you could mop up most of it, disassemble them and make a fortune on eBay.
Sclater street mostly had crackheads and strays pushing beat up racers / mountain bikes / hybrids. They don't seem to have much organisation or association to the stalls and only have one bike at a time each, leaving it propped up against a railing or curb and stood by a couple metres back so that - I assume - they can deny ownership if the police come by. Once a bike has been sold they pop off for a bit and return with another. There were a few teenagers flogging mountain bikes in the same way earlier in the day - so my guess is this is the "n00b" method.
In the Southern carpark to the Western corner seems to be the hotter gear - a steady stream of sketchier guys bringing in fixies with gold anodising, track wheels etc. They kept them in a sort of melange in the middle of the pathway between those stalls selling loads of CatEye lights and framed by old bangers - again I assume mostly so that they can fall back and deny ownership should the police pay a visit. It was also between these guys that an argument broke out earlier in the day around 7am ("fat f*cking black c*nt" shouted and a tool brandished).
In the Northern car-park are what appear to be legitimate sellers - they have those vans and neat lines of bike racks holding their wares. Impossible to say what proportion are stolen or second hand, but some of the prices on them are quite dodgy (£160 for a high-end hybrid with hydraulic brakes?). One guy appeared to be into repainting them, covering them in a bit of polystyrene foam and flogging them as brand new.
It turned out there were a fair few others there looking for their stolen steed, and some camaraderie developed between us mourning bike-widows as we stood around watching business churn on. Conceivably the thieves would be wary of people doing this, or maybe try to intimidate people out of it, but there was neither - my guess is simply because they act with impunity and little risk of culpability regardless.
What is frustrating is that surely with a bit more police time or organisation from cyclists this shit could be stopped? I'm told the police are active, but the cynic in me says they could swing by any time, grab a few bikes and maintain the approved statistics on recovered bicycles for whatever politics it is that drive their budget (likely suffering from cuts). As the day went on I was tempted to take photos of the more blatantly stolen bikes so that I could post them up here and it not be a wasted day, but I didn't fancy my chances angering people who - in the police's own words - would probably stab you.
Bike theft seems to be a massive problem that affects us all. So is there not something we could organise around? A hashtag or repository for photos / descriptions of bikes you see being sold on the street?
Even if I'd saved or memorised all the bikes from the last 4 pages I'd still struggle to identify them in the chaos of the market. Yet if I had managed to photograph the bikes and let the community have at it - maybe someone who got their bike nicked last night would in few days time get pointed toward this thread and see.
nice write up, sorry for your loss
it is amazing the amount of dodgy people down brick lane selling bikes week after week the police know they are dodge we know they are dodge but thwey are still there week after week, year after yearif the police just did a massive crack down over the period of say a month
targeting the guys / crackheads on sclater street it might drive them into thinking the business isn't worth it, could they be hassled out of buisiness
maybe the forum could try following some of these guys back their den where they keep the stolen bikes and reporting the mother loador even slightly underhand
we should get 5-10 perople every sunday claiming stolen goods from the stalls thus getting them hounded week after week
if the police have enough people reporting stolen goods on those stalls they might quieten down -

Since we all hear stories of bikes getting stolen all too often, I felt I should share a story with a positive outcome.
About a year ago, my brother was cycling through Clissold park in Hackney when he saw a man with cycling gear running full pelt after a bike, this bike in turn was being ridden by a shady character. Naturally my brother gave chase, suspecting that something was up. Unsure of if the bike was indeed stolen my brother followed the suspected thief for 1 or 2 minutes towards stoke newington high street, and at one point along the way, 12 or so kids who had been playing football crossed the road in front of both my brother and the suspect forcing the suspect to slow down. Seizing this opportunity my brother grabbed hold of the saddle and said "Is this your bike?" and immediately the guy dismounted the bike confirming to my brother that he was guilty. The thief then sheepishly walked away to shouts of "Don't fucking steal bikes bro" and after this brief exchange my brother cycled both bikes back to the park to reunite the stolen bike with it's rightful owner.Thought I'd share just to remind us all that there are good people out there too

STOLEN: My cycle was stolen in Angel on Tuesday night.
It's a chrome Bianchi Pista with the decals removed. Defining characteristics:
- No decals
- Grannie Smith stickers on the top tube
- Non-existant brake pads
- Front brake only
- Old corks for bar-ends
If anyone has any details or finds it I would be incredibly grateful! Obviously if it is recovered there will be a reward.
Pictured here on the left.
- No decals

Not a bad idea about staking the thieves out then following the stash. The sad part is that the police in Brick Lane couldn't be arsed to stop them. I remember their was a clamp down around the political announcement of their being a clamp down on bike theft due to a new an exciting squad called the cycle task force.
1 year after its like they have forgotten about Brick Lane and all they would rather do is stake out Central London and give tickets.
Anyway on a positive note a while ago I use to do bike recovery so maybe I might be up for the stake out in June/July on a weekend. Anyone up to task for some recon to take back what's ours.

If we wait for something to be done by the politicians ain't nothing going to be done. Press, publicity but little action.
I remember the video about the Cycle task force staking out London stations and other hotbeds and placing dummy bikes to be stolen and tracked. Great idea made it on BBC. Haven't seen em since.

Does it matter? They want the bike back, whoever is riding it now

Certainly, it's just that she glosses the person in the picture as the thief in her Twatter post.

Please help!
I had my fixed gear stolen this morning outside the Natural History Museum having put the finishing touches on it a couple of days ago. I don't have any pictures but if anyone sees anything that matches the following description, please post. I've spent so much time/money getting this bike shipshape, can't bear to lose it!
Thanks.
