I'm now wondering whether it would be distasteful to wrap the bars in tape that fades the other way e.g. from white to yellow going left to right in that photo.

I don't think that refined taste should be a primary concern on that particular project.
Now get back to your studies and stop talking about old bikes. -

Fair enough - I was asked this afternoon about 2nd order differential equations for oscillating weights, and at that very moment I was thinking that I should look for a SR rear mech for my Roberts TT bike and that the unit I'd planned to use (Favorit PWB (Prag Warsawa Berlin) - would be perfect for the Zacopane given it's peace race naming...

Ah...the old oscillating weight issue.....always raises it's ugly head around the stedlocks household too!
I'll get some pictures taken of the Bird......it's really a bit special, but too damn small. Have you got any idea what the holdsworth is James? I'm thinking a Mistral or Cyclone, but can't be sure.....
I love the look of the stallard.....and the benotto! -
• #107
It's a tricky one - Most of the common Holdsworth models of that era had filed "English" lugs whereas yours has sleek European ones Prugnat or Bocama or somesuch... I wondered about "professional" models, but they tended to have wrapover seatstays and campag track ends - yours appears to ave neither of those - I'll get back to you on that one...

James, you definitely need a Huret Jubilee for the Roberts.
-

A Drilliumed one would look smashing I agree - I'll keep my eyes open
At the tail end of last year I cleared through a whole lot of stuff I "knew" I'd never need including a Titanium Huret Success. I was going to use the Peace Race mech on the Roberts but I think it really belongs on the Stallard now! -

SR pedals ftw - I'll post a photo of some hilarious (but at the same time splendid) ones that I was using with the pengy tribute
In the foreground is the rear mech I was banging on about.
Weirdly, the mounting bolt is too small to fit a standard dropout.
Anyone got any ideas? it screws happily into a BB axle which makes it M8x1.0 I think...

I guess these use a 'top hat' nut which comes from the inside of the hanger, like an old Simplex?
-
• #112
I think you're right - all the photos on the web sow it with a hanger and or a rear nut...

OMG. That steele wool is incredible.

Small update on my glacial progress
Softly softly catchy monkey as my dear sainted aunt would have said
The astute amongst you will note that I'm too lazy to rebuild the back wheel with shiny stainless spokes and too much of a tight-wad to go looking for a slightly less sharky TA ring - it's a rat after all and can be ratted with a sharky ring until the chain starts slipping...

Still looking fine though mate :0)

Cheers, I was worried I may have gone too far with things when I replaced the gently aged head/seat-tube badges with H.Llloyds blinging repros...
I'm also having a bit of bother with the headset - not entirely sure how you remove the serrated nut-thing - anyone know if the upper bit's threaded, or should I just be hoiking it out using the little holes on the side. -
• #117
It isnt threaded, it just needs a little coaxing and it should just pull off.
Smashing frame by the way -

Beautiful lugs on the Gillott!
Got the internal cable routing sorted out, it's all done. It's a lot of fun, and surprisingly stiff with the BB-chainstay supports. Have been in exam lockdown for the last two weeks (and until the 7th of June) so my riding has been restricted to the commute from my room to the library and back. Which is lucky as I only have one 19mm tub and it's in what can only be described as 'hilarious' condition.
I've promised myself that I'm not going to start the 3000 build until after my last exam - we'll see how that goes.
