yeah...but, you see, with an italian headset your handlebars won't hit the wheel when you turn

??!?!?!
Are you saying that modern groupsets with external bearings do not suffer the same problems as older BBs in italian threaded shells?
Do you know why?
I'm curious because my two go to road bikes both have Italian threaded BB shells and I have just sufffered my first experience of wondering why I couldn't get into the big ring (assumed it was my fuck up tightening the gear cable after recent adjustment) before finding the crank lock up on me completely. I have been thinking about upgrading one to a more modern groupset, and I have been considering whether to go down the route of selling all Italian threaded frames to eliminate unthreading (and eliminate the hassle of finding a new BB when you want to swap a groupset from one frame to another).
Yup my old CX bike had Italian Centaur square taper and kept undoing, replaced with FSA Exo Carbon - no issues at all, nor should there be. Same with Ti Van Tuyl, Ultra Torque cups don't undo.

Did you mean
?It's nice that Manc Ronnie thinks the laws of physics change when you move a bearing by about Β½", but I suspect that what success he has had by changing BB format in Italian frames is really down to the thread lock which seems to come ready-applied to all external BB cups these days.

Fair enough, it works.

Rancid silver CervΓ©lo thing
Really?

What thread lock do you use / recommend?
Campag suggest Loctite 222 for UltraTorque

Loctite for campy ut, really? Never used never needed never will. They are tough enough to get out as is as i found out today.

Loctite for campy ut, really?
Yes, it's the official second best method. Bear in mind that they recommend 222, which is not a strong bond, and that it is to be used with a light tightening torque, not the usual 35Nm.
If you install into clean threads with a decent anti-seize grease, no extra threadlock (the cups already come with a factory-applied solid yellow locking compound) and 35Nm, the cups come out pretty easily with a decent socket type tool, i.e. UT-BB130
The ones in my 585 are done with Loctite 222, but I've never had to try to get them out so I can't say whether it's any harder than with method 1.

nobody today has the kind of pharmacological assistance which Soviet bloc athletes enjoyed in those days.
I disagree. I dont know where they list sanctions for international track cyclists. But just looking at this USADA list shows there is plenty of people getting caught for both steroids & stimulants. Doping is rife at the highest level of all sports, even darts, curling or speed walking. It is very possible to get away with it so people will. The drugs available and effective use has also moved along a lot since those days.

Here for athletes currently under sanction by UCI.
The only world class track cyclist I spotted on that list is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tatsiana_Sharakova, and she's Belarussian, last bastion of Sovietism :-)

Enigma can never be porn IMO,
reminds me too much of middle aged men who wear superdry and watch top gear -

Lol, sounds like you're moaning about people being brand addicts.

I'm 41 and gave up watching Top Gear ages ago. Am I still allowed to wear Gola trainers? The Enigma's quite nice but I'll stick to the Ron Cooper just to prove how bloody old I am. :)
External cups FTW - or not unthreading anyway.
