No it wasn't! We were up against the two favourites as a most outside of outsiders.
Yo dawg
One of the main things that I don't get is all of the bellyaching about us and no europe. We've not been there for a long time and have had to cut our cloth accordingly. All of the other teams are regular CLers, so get that huge financial windfall and can build their squads accordingly, no?
Too right. Maybe we should be have been forced to play meaningless games against other random non Euro participants every few weeks just to even things out a bit

^Er.... we failed to qualify for the Europa League, too.

Athletico [sic] won fair and square tonight. They played a brilliant second half. Tough to take yes, will we come be coming back stronger next year? Most likely.
I think we will sell 3 or 4 players (Luiz, Torres, Mikel, Courtois) to generate funds for a top striker. Add Lukaka to the squad and integrate some of the youngsters together with the likes of van Ginkel, Matic, Salah, Kalas and we've potentially got a very good squad.
I was hoping for us to be challenging for trophies this, definitely not expecting it so from that pov I think chelsea have overachieved this year. So far Mourinho has the benefit of doubt. He managed to have the club challenging for silverware whereas for the last 3 years we've been out of the PL title race and didn't have anything else to focus on but Europe. All in all not a bad run.
Final assessment is that we've improved on the last 2 years even though we didn't win a European trophy this year. C'est la vie, c'est la guerre, c'est la pomme de terre...

Which young players did Mourinho integrate during his last spell at Chelsea?
I really don't remember that being a part of his philosophy, but I'd happily be corrected on that.

I think that was inferred, J-Dog...
Top lolz tonight, let the bum squeaking/bedwetting continue...

Jaw do you really think you'll sell Coutois? There aren't that many world class goal keepers available, and he wouldn't cost you anything, maybe sell on Cech and let the new kid take over.
Also how much do you think the three other players mentioned would generate in transfer fees? I can't see you getting much for them, and I'm not sure anyone would want to pay any money for mikel?

Luiz £20m+, Courtois £15m+, Mikel £5m and Torres for another £5m. That gives us £45m at least for which we should be able to get someone decent and stay FFP compliant.
Barcelona are in dire need of a GK and a CB and I can see them coming with their bids early because of all the shit that's going on plus the added inconvenience of a WC during the transfer window.

• #101938
As far as I know Barca already have a keeper lined up Marc Andre ter Stegen, from borussia munchengladbach
seriously don't know why they are thinking about getting Luiz in, but maybe he's a stopgap until bartra? or some other youth product makes good...
isn't the thinking that courtois will be used as a makeweight for costa? or is that journo's putting 2+2 together and coming up with 5

Add Moses, Marin and Kakuta and we'll be looking at £50m+ and a much smaller payroll to boost.

• #101940
Courtois is worth a fair bit more than £15mn

Not counting on it. When it comes to transfers at Atletico it's not the club that's calling the shots these days.
MATS could be a done deal but nothing is officially signed, Luiz would be a perfect fit for Barca. A CB that can play the ball out and is quite versatile. It would allow them to ship out Alex Song and play Mascherano back in midfield more regularly.

He sure is but you can count the number of clubs that are able to afford that sort of fee for a GK on one hand.

Imagine Sterling under thrushy. Poor old Jose will have a hard job explaining to him how to do nothing and park the bus.
Look closer to home: Oscar. Then again you can see why he hates creative players; hazard was a fault with those diagonals.

Well well well...
Eden Hazard added to fuel to criticism of Chelsea's tactics when he criticised their approach under Jose Mourinho after the club's Champions League exit to Atletico Madrid.
“Chelsea aren't set up to play football. Chelsea are set up to counter-attack," said the Belgian after Chelsea had been beaten 3-1 at home.
Is he on here?

Courtois will not be sold. Will be back next season.
Not overly impressed with Costa. No thanks. Sell Ba & Torres.
Next season Lukaku, Eto'o & (some expensive striker)
we were beaten fair and square tonight. really miss matic in midfield in the champions league this season.
With running the risk of sounding like a liverpool fan, next year will be our year.
