Looking good, it's my bike you use for inspiration, i am switching it for a klein quantum i just bought :)
-
• #3
Ha, cool! Pic above not working for me but will follow your progress with interest.

final coat of primer today.. tomorrow it will go pink!
in the dingy light of my shed the primer came out a lot darker in the photos than it actually is

Subscribed. I'm doing the same thing to a 2.8 at the moment.
-

Subbed. Cool looking resto.
^^^^ I've just bought a Quantum too - Will be a very slow build process tho, no thread required! -
• #7
Are you doing it all yourself? Cool. What forks are you using, looks like lugged steel?
-
• #8
yep.. tackling it all myself, sanding and priming went better than i expected, just hoping i don't screw up the colour now! Fork is indeed steel, its a surly which i had to go with due to difficulty finding anything with a long enough steerer tube. Id like to go carbon but finding a 1 inch carbon fork to suit the frame has proved tricky. On the plus side the skinny steel fork does remind me of the fork found on the classic cannondale track which i think suits it fairly good

Yeah that's what I thought at first, that you'd gotten a c-dale track fork. If you change your mind about material, here's a straight blade carbon 1" fork and here's one with curved blades. Not too pricey but you'd have to give up the quill stem setup as well.
-

that curved blade fork would be nice, the current fork is a threadless setup as well, so that wouldn't pose any problems, think I'm gonna stick with the steel one for the time being as a money saving measure.. maybe a carbon one further down the line to lighten things up a bit would be nice. The surly steel fork probably weighs more than the frame!

1st coat of pink went on this yesterday, just gotta wait for 48 hours to pass and the second coat can go on, then its likely ill have to wait for 5 days until the decals arrive and i can clear coat, probably a blessing as at least the final coat of paint will have a good few days to solidify before touching it further..
Cleaning old parts and figuring out what new bits i need in the meantime.

Nice! I'm wondering whether this is actually a 3.0? What with the integrated seat clamp and top tube cable routing and all... Did you check the serial number under the BB shell?
-
• #13
I think you're right! serial is:
66311901649 which according to vintage cannondale and correlating with frame size etc
6 - drop out spacing 126
63 frame size
1190 - november 1990
1649 frame number
which certainly looks like the frames here with the integrated seatpost bold and cable guides on top like you mention
http://www.vintagecannondale.com/year/1990/1990.pdf
which means the decals I ordered are wrong, still for a cheap rebuild and DIY spray job with £10 on decals i don't think its a deal breaker, i think i prefer the 2.8 decals anyway, always assumed this frame was around 93-4 but i guess 1990 is a nice round number!

• #14
Whats The colours name? :) looks good
-
• #15
its this:
i know Krylon isnt all that but its cheep and it was just the colour i wanted.. just did lots of work sanding and priming so i had a good base to apply it too making sure to do super thin coats..
-
• #16
love the colour!
-
• #17
I'm sure shinkuu miss's old dale 2.8 was exactly the same colour
-
• #19
^^^^^^ but if you get new decals for £7 you'll get the classic head tube logo with the house on it, ffs!
-
• #20
Another one!?!? This is taking the piss. 2.8's everywhere. I want one now.
Looking forward to this, pinkus all the way. -

^ That looks great! Might be tempted to go white bartape afterall.. maybe
@russmeyer these are the decals i have on the way.. is that head tube logo the one you mean?

Looking forward to this, pinkus all the way.I've got one on the way too. Plan to do strip it to raw and leave it, with the same decals as above, but black, not white.

here's the link, they have the 1990 set almost at the bottom.

Im considering those, I really like this logo as well though..
All food for thought..
I have another slight problem though, I have got the original bolted shifter mount but one side is slightly stripped, it's possible to get a bolt into it but its not ideal, i did see a thread here with a link to buy a new one for around $30.. i have been through all the other cannondale build threads I've been looking at recently but cant find it again.. if anyone can remember seeing such a link and could post it that would be great!
EDIT: I found them!

Hello! Long time lurker & I've never posted in current projects, so here goes. Seems to be a few of these Cannondale 2.8s around the forum recently & threads like the one below have me all inspired:
http://www.lfgss.com/thread124846.html
I've had this 2.8 for about a year, its been my everyday bike as a courier and winter road steed but it needs a bunch of drivetrain bits & a headset after the winter and fully re-cabling so thought i might as well give it a bit of love at the same time.
I picked the frame up for around £20 and with the added bonus of having no dents or cracks.. it had been poorly rattle canned previously so I have no issue with stripping the old paint. Along with this i don't want to throw a lot of cash at it as i have other bikes for that & this will likely still be an everyday ride
I get along well with the components setup right now, i may re-think the bars/stem combo somewhat but for the meantime I'm going to stick with the 105 group and clean it all up nicely as it works for me right now..
I really like how this looks:

Im thinking slightly more pink as I heard real men ride pink bikes, 2.8 decals in white are on the way
Frame is currently stripped with a 1st coat primer.. but its old incarnation looked like this:
