Tester what kind of solution would you approve as cheap 1x10 cross setup?

sram type 2 x7 with narrow-wide raceface @ front, and try to find a bargain levers?

You don't need the narrow wide if you use Type 2. You need a single ring of some type. If you need cranks the Alfine crank might do the whole job for you - its ring isn't ramped, and it comes with an integrated bash. And it's tester approved.

A retroshift / shimano set up with a chain retainer might come in cheaper but will be more fugly.
