  • Regarding tyres, there’s around 4-5mm of useable tread on a slick tyre, so depending on how worn it is diameters can reduce by up to 8-10mm. It’s not just the amount of material that is worn off that can put a tyre ‘over the cliff’ though but the condition of the rubber compound, which is largely determined by its thermal history.

    Interestingly, a full wet tyre has an additional 5mm of tread so a new extreme wet has around 10mm larger diameter than a brand new slick (wet tyres also have a slightly different profile). This is one of the reasons why (ideally) you’d have a different set up for wet running. However if it starts to rain after a dry start to a race (and visa versa) you’re not going to be able to adjust ride height settings in the suspension. Just one of the many considerations for race engineers…
