If you're using friction mode, why not stick with 9 cogs? 8 speed cogs were a different width, so 8 speed spacers won't produce perfect indexed shifting with 9 speed cogs. Not that you're using an indexed system.
Cycle Clinic in Suffolk had some of the Wheels Manufacturing kits in stock. I bought one off Ebay from them not too long ago. Work fine.
